Mixing tree shapes mimic's nature's diversity, giving your yard an organic, harmonious feel.

Here's 3 tips for planning your landscape:

1️⃣ Combine tall, columnar trees like Taylor Junipers with round trees like Maples to create layers and visual interest.

2️⃣ Use pyramidal trees like Emerald Green Arborvitaes to frame pathways, and softer, cascading shapes like weeping willows for a relaxing focal point.

3️⃣ Blend shapes to maximize benefits—use tall trees for privacy, wide canopies for shade, and ornamental shapes for aesthetic appeal.

Where to Buy Native Plants Near Northville
At last weekend’s farmers’ market, the Northville Tree Champions booth got the same question over and over: “Where can I actually buy native plants?” Here’s the answer: Native plants raised for southeast Michigan are the ones most likely to thrive in your yard and the ones most likely to support the birds, butterflies, and pollinators we want to protect. The good news is you don’t need to drive far to find them.
This Saturday, May 16 • Friends of the Rouge Native Plant Sale:
Ford Field Park, Dearborn • 9:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. One of the best one-day plant sales in the region, with knowledgeable volunteers on hand to help you choose. Bring a wagon and cash.
Closest to home
• Willow Greenhouse - 7839 Curtis Rd, Northville. Family-owned, full-service nursery. Ask for the native plant section and call ahead in May to confirm what’s in stock.
• Michigan Native Plants (Michiganense Natives) - 8820 N Lilley Rd, Plymouth. Native specialist; pesticide-free. Opens for the season May 14.
If you only buy three plants this season …
Our volunteer botanical advisor suggests starting with three nearly foolproof natives that look beautiful in any garden setting:
• Butterfly w**d (Asclepias tuberosa) - brilliant orange, monarch host, thrives in full sun.
• Foxglove beardtongue (Penstemon digitalis) - tidy, upright, white flowers, hummingbird favorite.
• Little bluestem (Schizachyrium scoparium) - a graceful native grass with bronze fall color.
All three are sun-loving, drought-tolerant once established, and nearly impossible to kill.

WEATHER UPDATE: Saturday morning, 10:30 and we are here happily pulling garlic mustard! Come join us. If you ever pull it on your own, please be sure to put it in a bag and dispose of it! It can still set seed if you just leave it on the trail.

Spend the morning amongst the beautiful trees at Legacy Park. Removing garlic mustard helps our native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees, and all the wildlife that depend on them. Meet at the restrooms behind the Emergency Services Complex off of 7 Mile Rd. Tuesday, May 12, 10:30- 12:30 and Saturday, May 16 9:30-11:30.

Join the Northville Garden Club for the upcoming Garlic Mustard Pull events at Legacy Park.

These volunteer efforts help protect the health of Legacy Park’s woodlands by removing garlic mustard, an invasive species that crowds out native wildflowers and impacts the natural ecosystem.

Northville Parks & Recreation is proud to support the Northville Garden Club and their continued work caring for and preserving the beauty of our community’s natural spaces.

Volunteer Dates:
• Friday, May 8 | 9-11 AM | Meet at Wayne Rd. Kiosk
• Tuesday, May 12 | 10:30 AM-12:30 PM | Meet at Trailhead Bathroom
• Saturday, May 16 | 9:30-11:30 AM | Meet at Trailhead Bathroom

Gloves are required. A limited number of gloves will be available through The Stewardship Network’s “Gloves for Good” program.

Thank you to the Northville Garden Club and all volunteers helping keep Legacy Park healthy and thriving.
