Northport Native Garden Initiative

Northport Native Garden Initiative Native plants provide food and shelter for local wildlife. Need help? Ask us!

Starting with one corner in the village, we hope to start a movement and encourage others in our community to plant natives in their yards as well.

Tyska Native Plants & Consulting sources seeds from native plants growing in the wild on Long Island. All their plants are ecotypes to our area. If you have not yet added Butterfly W**d to your yard or can’t help but keep adding more, then you can get these beauties next week. More milkweed = more monarch butterflies.

Yesterday was amazing! We want to thank Mayor Koch, the Village Board of Trustees, and Village Administrator Roland Buzzard for their support as we were able to install two GIANT red maples down in Cow Harbor Park.

Extra special thanks to Northport resident and friend of NNGI, Jon Holden, Vice President of Steven Dubner Landscaping, Inc. who very generously donated the manpower and time to professionally plant these beauties. The skill, speed, and precision with which they worked was impressive to watch.

Meghan Dolan, our Commissioner of Parks coordinated the planting and we are so thankful for her dedication to our community.

To round out what was already a wonderful local collaboration, our local coffee shop Southdown Coffee, generously donated coffee for the whole team.

These trees will add fall color, and even more importantly biodiversity into our beloved park. We look forward to continuing our work within our community to add beneficial plants to our ecosystem and help educate homeowners on their benefits.
