Each year, the City of Northport has a special event that honors individuals who stand out for their contributions to the community in an area of work. This includes in heritage, education, religion, and business. At the top of the honors is the Northport Citizen of the Year, which was awarded last week to 88-year-old Ophelia Tierce Harrison, who joins a long list of notable individuals who have etched their name into the legacy of Northport.
The Northport Citizen of the year is an annual event, taking place since 1976, when Reverend B.F. Atkins took home the first award. Winners include Dr. Norman Carlson, Sam P. Faucett III, the 2024 winner Mike Griffin, and many more who have made a name foe themselves in the City of Northport. Master of Ceremonies for the event, Sammy Watson, explained the honor highlights the best of what Northport has to offer “recognizing individuals who have made a significant contribution to the community, demonstrating exceptional dedication, leadership, and service.”
Growing up in Northport, Ophelia Tierce Harrison was a graduate of Tuscaloosa County High School. She married her husband and high school sweetheart, Ben, right after graduation, and moved away from the city for some time, but has remained a staple to the area for many years. Mike Griffin, 2024 winner of the award, presented the honor to Ophelia, and spoke on her impact in great depth.
“If you have lived around here long enough, you can see her influence runs far deeper than any list could show,” Griffin said. “Her legacy is woven into the fabric of our community. In schools, churches, and hearts, she has touched quietly, faithfully, and without seeking any attention.”
