This month marks 25 years since a revolutionary drug, Gleevec, was approved by the FDA, transforming chronic myeloid leukemia (CML) from a fatal diagnosis to a highly manageable condition.

Contributing to this drug’s discovery was the work of renowned University of Chicago researcher Dr. Janet Rowley. Dr. Rowley had received two grants from the Leukemia Research Foundation to fund her CML research. She discovered a recurring chromosome translocation – an abnormality when a chromosome breaks and a fragmented piece reattaches to another chromosome - which resulted in the Philadelphia chromosome seen in CML.

This historic finding helped spur the development and ultimate discovery of Gleevec, which changed the CML survival rate from 3-to-5 years into a normal life expectancy. Learn more about our research grant program: https://bit.ly/4tSRTX3

In a study published in the journal Science Translational Medicine, a team of scientists from The Jackson Laboratory revealed not only a potential new way to treat acute myeloid leukemia (AML) without harsh chemotherapy, but also a promising strategy to study more gene-silencing mechanisms in other diseases.

The research, led by Eric Wang, PhD, a 2024 Leukemia Research Foundation New Investigator Research Grant (NIRG) recipient, was funded in part by the Foundation. In addition, two former NIRG recipients also contributed to this study: Hussein Abbas, MD, PhD (2022) and Iannis Aifantis, PhD (2003).
