Northfield Beit Midrash

Northfield Beit Midrash The Northfield Beit Midrash (House of Study) is a space and a concept. All Beit Midrash events are open to students, faculty, and staff from Carleton and St.

The space is a modest room on the 2nd Floor of the building in downtown Northfield (just off the Carleton campus). It will be a location to host seminars, talks, and study sessions on texts and topics that touch on Jewish history, philosophy, politics, language, and more. In addition to events planned by the Beit Midrash organizers, students and others are welcome to apply to use the space for ini

tiatives of their own creation. More than just a physical space, the Beit Midrash aims to provide the community with an intellectual “center of gravity” for exploring Jewish Thought and the Humanities - one that will complement the offerings in the course catalogue, those of the JSC, and those of Carleton’s Rabbi and Associate Chaplain Shoshana Dworsky. Olaf, and to members of the Northfield community. Participants from any religious background are welcome.

Dear Northfied Friends,

This year, the Northfeld Beit Midrash will host a series of gatherings to give us all a chance to deepen our understanding of the Jewish fall holidays - Rosh Hashana (the Jewish New Year), Yom Kippur (the day of atonement), and Sukkot (the fall harvest festival that inspired Thanksgiving).

This invitation is for the SECOND gathering - for Yom Kippur! We will show a short video lecture by Rabbi Meir Soloveichik (about 30 min) and then enjoy refreshments and fellowship. Please use this link to RSVP: http://evite.me/DHN36MV9ED

The Sukkot gathering will be on October 13th at the Rubenstein home & sukkah (218 Manitou St). Please look out for that invitation!

Note on location: The Beit Midrash is quite small so we are hosting the event in the Community Room at Just Food Co-Op.

Rabbi Dr. Meir Y. Soloveichik is the rabbi of Congregation Shearith Israel in Manhattan, the oldest Jewish community in the United States, founded in 1654. He is also director of the Zahava and Moshael Straus Center for Torah and Western Thought at Yeshiva University. Rabbi Soloveichik has lectured internationally to Jewish and non-Jewish audiences on topics relating to faith in America, the Hebraic roots of the American founding, Jewish theology, bioethics, wartime ethics, and Jewish-Christian relations. His essays have appeared in the Wall Street Journal, Mosaic, the Jewish Review of Books, Commentary, First Things, Azure, Tradition, and the Torah U-Madda Journal. Rabbi Soloveichik is a descendent of one of the great dynasties of Orthodox Judaism: he is the son of Rabbi Eliyahu Soloveichik, grandson of the late Rabbi Ahron Soloveichik, and the great nephew of the late Rabbi Joseph B. Soloveitchik.

Rabbi Soloveichik graduated summa cm laude from Yeshiva University, received his rabbinic ordination from the Rabbi Isaac Elchanan Theological Seminary, and studied at its Beren Kollel Elyon. He has also studied at Yale Divinity School, and in 2010, he received his doctorate in religion from Princeton University.

Beautiful article inspired by our Hanukah party this year and the teaching of Rabbi Dovid Greene of the Chabad center in Rochester.

Recently, I was invited to attend the ritual lighting of the menorah as a part of the celebration of Hanukkah, and I was honored to be asked to be a part of the lighting.
