For the third year in a row, a Northern Cambria School District team with the Technology Student Association earned a national title.

Congratulations to Zoe McCombie and Braiden Kammerer who were named National Champions in Technical Design at the 2026 TSA National Conference in Washington, DC.

In this event, students are given 24 hours to solve a real world engineering problem by designing a working solution. They research the problem, brainstorm ideas, develop three design concepts, create a CAD drawing of their best design, and explain how their solution meets the design criteria. This year's challenge was to design a device that could be stored in a backpack and then quickly be deployed to keep both the student and the backpack dry during rainy weather.

Zoe also competed in Flight. She advanced to the Top 20 in the nation, outperforming more than 80 other competitors to earn a spot in the finals. During the final round, she had just 45 minutes to build a brand new airplane. Her plane flew well, and she narrowly missed earning a place in the Top 10 nationally.

Braiden also competed in CAD Foundations. In this event, students are given a technical drawing and must recreate it in Autodesk Fusion within a set time limit. Braiden was the third competitor to finish the challenge, although a few small details likely kept him from placing.

These students are incredibly proud of what they accomplished this year. They are already looking forward to next year!

Tomorrow morning we conclude our conference with the award ceremony. There are 48 states, 1 territory and 4 countries(Japan, Turkey, Germany and Korea) and a total of over 9,500 people this year. Best of luck to our Colts! We are proud of all you have accomplished already and can’t wait to see what tomorrow holds. 🤩

We are excited as Braiden has had a great showing in his CAD event. For this, you are given a problem and they time how fast you can complete the solution that you must draw and then judge your drawing. He was the third competitor to finish! 🤩

Some late night work on the technical design challenge. Zoe and Braiden opted to pick up another competition while here at Nationals. They have 24 hours to design a solution to a problem. They must identify the problem, develop three possible solutions, sketch designs, draw them in CAD and put together a digital file containing all elements to show the judges their process. 😮

It’s a challenge but they were up late working and feel as though they have a good path to a solution. 🤞
