Congratulation Inmo Yang on winning Sibelius Violin Competition! 👏

Inmo Yang wins the XII International Jean Sibelius Violin Competition!! After unforgettable final rounds, Chair of the Jury Sakari Oramo presented the first prize to Inmo Yang, second prize to Nathan Meltzer and third prize to Dmytro Udovychenko. Congratulations!

Thank you also to Radion sinfoniaorkesteri with conductor Dima Slobodeniouk and Helsingin kaupunginorkesteri - Helsinki Philharmonic Orchestra with conductor Anna-Maria Helsing for the impeccable artistry and Musiikkitalo for offering a grand setting for the finals.

Winner Announced!! We are thrilled to announce Garrison Gerard (b.1994) and his original composition "Discourse", as the winner of the 2020 LMF Composition Challenge - COVID 19: Through a Pandemic. Garrison is an American composer of electroacoustic and concert music. Characterized by dramatic gestures and moments of arresting luminosity, his music is an exploration through intimate sound worlds. His work builds on multiple
traditions spanning from spectralism, modernism, and minimalism as well as reaching back to the classical canon and renaissance music.

His music has been presented internationally with performances by groups such as [Mod]ular Ensemble, Fort Worth Symphony, and Nu Atmospheres Ensemble. An ardent collaborator, he has been commissioned by ensembles and soloists such as Andrew Cook, Spencer Byrd, the Avenue C Project, Atelier Piano Quartet, and Amorsima String Trio. In 2020 Gerard served as Artist-in-Residence of Padre Island National Seashore—he recorded sounds across the island and incorporated them in multiple pieces exploring the biomes and environmental impact of society along the coast of Texas.

Gerard completed his Masters degree in Music Composition from the University of North Texas and received a Bachelors in Piano from Harding University in Searcy, Arkansas. He is currently a PhD candidate at the University of North Texas in Denton,
where he serves as a composition teaching fellow.

Presenting the Abigail Park (16), Winner of the 2020 LMF Young Artists Scholarship Competition!! Abigail is a scholarship Fellow at Music Institute of Chicago’s Academy, and is currently studying with Almita Vamos. Abigail has been awarded top prizes in number of competitions, including 1st place in the elementary division at Sejong Music Competition (2014), 1st place in the primary division at SAM (2015), 1st place in the junior division at SAM (2017), 1st place at the AMI Violin Competition (2018), 1st place in the intermediate division at SAM (2019), and most recently she placed 1st place in the senior division at
Confucius Music Competition in Chicago. She is currently a junior at Glenbrook North High School.

Presenting Jan Vargas Nedvetsky (14yo) - Winner of the LMF 2020 YASC Cello prize. He is a Merit Scholarship Fellow at the Music Institute of Chicago, where he began at age 5 with Gilda Barston, and now studies with Horacio Contreras. Jan’s other principal teachers are Vladimir Perlin and Jerome Pernoo.

In 2019-2020 Jan played in the masterclass with John Sharp at the Chicago Symphony Orchestra; was featured in the ABC 7 TV program Amazing Kids and on WFMT Introductions radio program; won prizes at many competitions including De Paul, Walgreens, Society of American Musicians, Chicago Orchestra Youth Auditions, and Chicago Chamber Concerto Competition competition to name a few.

Jan is an advanced math scholar at the Art of Problem-Solving Academy, a first-degree Black Belt in Taekwondo, and a winner of local math competitions. In addition to music Jan loves history, astronomy and architecture.

Meet the Winners of the 2020 LMF Young Artists Scholarship Competition: 14 year old pianist Zachary Guo is first-place winner of the 2019 Sejong Piano Competition in the Junior Division. He began his piano studies at age 5 with Dr. Soo Young Lee, Artist Faculty at the Music Institute of Chicago. Since then, Zachary has given numerous solo recitals, chamber music concerts, and received many musical merits at an early age throughout Chicagoland.
