Junior Board of Northbrook

Junior Board of Northbrook Jr high and highschool boys working together to serve meals to patients and their families staying at the Ronald McDonald House: Comer Children's Hospital.

History: The Junior Board of Northbrook (JBN) was founded in 2004 by Ann Cariola, Tami Olsen and Deb Klarfeld who were mothers of only boys and wanted an organization that was exclusively focused on providing service to one worthy organization. They wanted to form a group that would promote a life long commitment to volunteerism and philanthropy. Furthermore, they wanted a group that would promot

e these values to a group of boys, in a fun manner, and in a way that could be incorporated into busy lives that were already filled with many extracurricular activities. Since 2004, 41 boys have participated on the Junior Board of Northbrook with some boys serving as long as 7 years. Furthermore, 98% of the board members have continued with full membership through his senior year in high school.

This past Sunday, Jackson, Bennett, and Will made Italian Beef Sandwiches, Caesar Salad and Chocolate Chip cookies for the families at the Ronald McDonald House at Loyola Medical Center. It was great to see several different families enjoy the meal we prepared. Jackson (team lead on this meal), shared “one family wanted to express their gratitude for our efforts by sharing with us chocolate candy that they had brought with them from Costa Rica. We enjoyed talking with the families and we felt good about doing something that hopefully brightened their day a bit.”

Owen and Evan recently went to the Ronald McDonald House. While there, they made cheese ravioli and marinara sauce, garlic bread, caesar salad and chocolate chip cookies. Owen was the team lead for this meal and Evan was a tremendous help. The house was pretty full and they served dinner to about 16 guests.

On Sunday, February 22, four Junior Board Northbrook members served dinner to the families staying at Ronald McDonald House. Jayce, Joe, Chris and Aidan served meatball subs and grilled cheese sandwiches with mixed berries and brownies. Mandarin oranges, juice boxes and water bottles were also offered, with the remaining added to the community refrigerator as a convenience to the families. On the car ride home, it was estimated that 15-20 people were served in-person, the most dinner guests that any of the young men remember attending the dinner in their personal histories of volunteering at RMH. We also packed remaining food into boxes for families to enjoy later. It was another successful outing for Junior Board Northbook!

On this Tuesday, we give thanks for our partnership with the Ronald McDonald House. This month the group of Mike, Flynn, Jackson, Will, and Jack prepared tortellini, caesar salad, and gingerbread cookies for dessert. The group also brought presents and according to Mike, “We delivered presents and the volunteers there and families were very excited”. “Many of the families came downstairs to eat, and the best part of the trip was seeing how excited the kids were when they saw the cookies”!
