Illinois Respite Coalition

Illinois Respite Coalition In 1998, the Illinois Respite Coalition (IRC) started out as a grassroots organization with parents, respite providers, and community leaders.

The IRC provides services to families and providers in the state of Illinois needing information, resources, and training relative to Lifespan Respite, and the IRC offers In-Home respite through a DHS funded grant. Technical assistance was provided by ARCH. Three years later, the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS) received federal funding to develop six demonstration grants an

d funded the IRC. In 2008, new board members joined the coalition and Markland began serving as fiscal agent. In 2013, volunteer board members continued to move the coalition mission and vision forward. The IRC partnered with Maryville Academy as their new fiscal agent.

May is Older Americans Month! Visit https://acl.gov/oam/older-americans-month for more information and for materials and sample social media posts and graphics. This month, we are also acknowledging National Foster Care Month and Mental Health Awareness Month.

This Older Americans Month, we are spotlighting Project Healthy Grandparents, one of the Network’s Exemplary Kinship Program designees. When grandparents step in to raise their grandchildren, they often put their own health last. Project Healthy Grandparents has worked for 30 years to change that by pairing families with nurses and social workers, building confidence, and breaking the cycle of stress that affects the whole family. When grandparent caregivers are supported, families are stronger across generations. Read more about how Project Healthy Grandparents is helping kin caregivers champion their health.

Please read on to learn about our latest resources and news, as well as other resources and news from around the field.

Older Americans Month
Every May, the Administration for Community Living (ACL) leads the nation’s observance of Older Americans Month, a time to recognize older Americans' contributions, highlight aging trends, and reaffirm our commitment to serving older adults.

The 2026 theme, Champion Your Health, focuses on prevention, wellness, and personal responsibility as cornerstones of healthy aging. It encourages taking an active role in managing your own health, advocating for yourself, accessing preventive care, and making informed decisions that support independence.

Join us in highlighting the importance of evidence-based approaches, self-management, and community partnerships that empower individuals to lead their healthiest lives.

On this site, find materials to help you celebrate, including this year's logo and sample article. Check back soon for the 2026 poster, social media graphics, and more. Use on social media to share your plans and see what others are doing!
