Max Daniel Weinstein was an inspiring and thoughtful friend to many and a devoted alumnus of Adelphi University. He received a Bachelor of Fine Arts in Theatre Design and Technology, graduating Cum Laude in 2002. Max passed away from a sudden heart attack on July 5th, 2020 at the age of 40. To celebrate and honor Max and the positive impact he had on
the Adelphi theatre community, the Weinstein family has established the Max Weinstein Theatre Scholarship, which is dedicated to student success. The fund will provide scholarships to outstanding Adelphi theatre students in financial need. We are very proud to announce that during the Adelphi Giving Day, on March 31, 2021, more than $26,000 was raised to help build this endowed scholarship. Max Weinstein believed in the magic of the theatre, how it allows audience members to suspend their disbelief, and take a short and meaningful journey to another place. During his time at Adelphi, Max was infinitely curious and inspired by all aspects of production: stage management, set construction and painting, lighting design, costume design, as well as playwriting and directing. He was compelled by how all departments must effectively work together to create a moving experience for audience members. Having worked in 45 Adelphi productions, Max was known as a selfless and dependable crew member. On one legendary production, Max performed double duty as stage manager and propmaster to save the show. People who worked with Max describe his quiet wisdom and profoundly kind presence. When he spoke up, he would ask important questions about the playwright's intentions and how it should affect backstage decisions. And no matter how intense a production became, Max never said a critical word about anyone. His calming demeanor and heartfelt compassion for his fellow students had a positive effect on every production. Throughout his life, Max made sure to support his friends in all of their endeavors, attending their plays, musical performances, open mics and comedy shows all over NYC. Max was a “theatre animal,” and a “person of the theatre,” in the most genuine way. The scholarship has been created for students like Max, who can demonstrate a passion, curiosity and investment in multiple aspects of theatre. The scholarship will welcome stage managers who write, scenic designers who direct, actors who design costumes and many other combinations of artistic interest. Theatre minors are also welcome to apply for this scholarship, the requirement is that they show an appreciation, understanding and insatiable curiosity in multiple aspects of theatre - and a love for the collaboration that is Theatre. By donating to the scholarship fund, you will help Adelphi students in need while paying tribute to a dear friend, kindhearted collaborator and positive spirit, Max Weinstein.
