Sunday, June 14th, our country celebrates the Stars and Stripes as we honor Flag Day. The United States flag is a powerful symbol of our history. The day marks the adoption of the U.S. flag on June 14, 1777 by resolution of the Second Continental Congress. In 1916, President Woodrow Wilson issued a presidential proclamation that designated June 14th as Flag Day.

June is Alzheimer’s and Brain Awareness month. The Alzheimer’s Association wants to get the word out about this devastating disease. A majority of people with Alzheimer’s are 65 and older. It’s a progressive disease and the most common cause of dementia. Pet therapy has been proven to help ease many medical issues. While having a dog or cat may not be an option for older adults with Alzheimer’s and dementia, there is an option that could provide some comfort.

June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month and June 15th is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day. The abuse of our elders is a problem more common than you might think. Abuse can range from physical, emotional, psychological, neglect, financial exploitation, abandonment and self-neglect. Studies have found that 1 in 10 older adults in the U.S. experience abuse or neglect each year, but those numbers are suspected to be higher because many cases are never reported to authorities. The month aims to highlight the prevention of elder abuse and promote safety, dignity and the rights of older adults.
One important thing about elder abuse, if you see something, say something.
Massachusetts has a hotline to report Elder Abuse 24/7, just call 1-800-922-2275.
You can check out the Highland Valley website for information as well.
