Northampton Community Arts Trust

Northampton Community Arts Trust The Arts Trust protects and ensures the long term vitality of the Northampton community through the creation and conservation of downtown arts spaces.

The Arts Trust envisions a downtown Northampton with art at its center, including a diversity of spaces that can incorporate a range of artistic activities: A black box theater, exhibition galleries, music and dance performance areas, work space for artists, office space for arts administration and retail space for arts related businesses. The Arts Trust will acquire spaces, either through purchas

e or donation, and ensure that such spaces remain dedicated to creative work as well as affordable and accessible to the community into the future. Adapted from the model of land trusts, the facilities created on property acquired by the Trust will enter into long-term lease agreements with the organizations, artists and businesses that occupy and manage the property. OUR CORE BELIEFS:

• Making art – art in the broadest sense of the word – contributes significantly to the long-term vitality of a community.
• Community creates shared meaning, alleviates isolation and makes diversity apparent.
• Affordable, accessible spaces for the arts are an essential element in the fabric of vital, healthy communities.
• Everyone will benefit when we all assume responsibility for the community’s arts spaces.

We successfully raised the $107,000 match for our Cultural Facilities Fund grant for professional lighting and sound systems in the Workroom Theater. Thanks to the Beveridge Foundation and many generous individual donors, we can now acquire and install the equipment, transforming this vast space into a fully operational black box theater. We can’t wait to light shows with this equipment this year!

We are committed to keeping 33 Hawley affordable for our nonprofit
partners. We operate with a very lean budget: we have no paid staff (run
entirely by volunteers), utilize an energy-efficient building with full-roof solar, and carry no commercial debt.

However, it is expensive to run and maintain a complex, 25,000 square
foot facility on a 1.5-acre lot (including significant winter snowplowingcosts). We are also building a crucial capital reserve fund for inevitable future repair and maintenance expenses.

We are working on new ways to lighten the financial burden on our building partners – watch for our Patreon launch! – but we will always rely on your support to help us cover operating costs.

A forthcoming ARPA-funded project, the ArtYard, will clean up an exterior area and add electricity for event lighting and food vendors. This will ensure that 33 Hawley is prepared with an essential outdoor gathering space.

This year, Valley Home Improvement completed the much-needed restroom in the Green Room. We are currently raising funds for updated flexible risers and seating in the Workroom, which will enhance safety and enable diverse seating configurations.

It has been another vibrant, art-filled year for the Northampton Community Arts Trust and 33 Hawley. We love seeing our space filled with people, whether for Arts Night Out, performances, classes, or private events. In these turbulent times, the Pioneer Valley community needs art more than ever.

May 2025 marked the 15th anniversary of the Arts Trust's founding. Inspired by land trusts, we began with a mission: to protect non-profit arts spaces in downtown Northampton from market-driven development. This new idea led to the creation of the Arts Trust and then to 33 Hawley.

Fifteen years later, we are proud to have built this beautiful arts facility, which houses our three building partners: the Northampton Center for the Arts, Available Potential Enterprises (APE), and Northampton Open Media. We completed this ambitious ten-year project (2013-2023) debt-free by proceeding as we raised funds and opening portions of the building as they were finished.

Have you ever been hiking at Fitzgerald Lake in Northampton? It's a lovely example of a land trust in action, conserving diverse habitats for wildlife and community use. Did you know that 33 Hawley is also owned by a land trust? However ,instead of preserving space for natural beauty, the trust preserves 33 Hawley for artistic nonprofit organizations such as , , and . The trust is run by a group of local volunteers who work to maintain the building and land of 33 Hawley. Keeping it in community control with creativity and affordability as the mission, not profits. This allows the community to have a say in how the building is used, run, and operated. The trust model is essential to keep the space affordable for community members to rent or attend programs offered by NFCA, NOM, and APE. To support our work and protect creative space in downtown Northampton, donate at the link in our bio.
