Chapter Charter-
I.Name: The name of this organization shall be the Black Male Network & Black Male Association Network
II.Statement of Purpose: The Black Male Network is an organization seeking to promote the success of African males at the college. Through strategic change in the following five areas, the organization seeks
to enhance the academic climate at the Eastern Campus:
a)Peer Group Influence
a.Addresses need for belonging, feedback, and new learning experiences
b.Key Social Cluster- athletic groups, student association involvement and academic study groups. b)Family Influence and Support/ Community Support
a.The organization will seek to arrange family support groups that include family members. b.Family members and community members can assist in retention energies. c.Research into the need for economic support and seeking community resources to provide that help, on a predetermined carefully scrutinized basis, such as: (Dream Keeper’s Program), or other Grant yielding programs. c)Faculty Relationship
a.Encourage peers to seek support. b.Reduce the anticipation that they will be subjected to some form of maltreatment by faculty. c.Seek to connect peers to faculty with a genuine interest in African American achievement. d)Identity Development and Self Esteem
a.Since low levels of performance equal low levels of motivation for success, we seek to demonstrate Mattering versus Marginality (Chickering). b.Assistance with the process of becoming black – “Nigeressence” (William Cross, 1995) -5 Stages model of identity development for African Americans. e)Institutional Environment
a.Reduce the stigma associated with seeking academic assistance, as it may be necessary for successful transition. a)Is open to all Suffolk County Community College students who complete the five point system described in the charter and stated as follows:
Applicants are to write a story about their lives
Applicants are to attend two multicultural events
Applicants are required to have some type of college community service or project
Applicants must recruit one member for the Black Male Network
All applicants must absolutely infuse love and passion and pluralism into all efforts
IV.Meetings. a)All meeting will be held at the following times:
Bi-weekly, Wednesday during common hour unless schedule differently by members if the Black Male Network, or its Advisor. a)Only students in good academic and disciplinary standing may serve as officers. All officers are expected to attend all meetings. In the event that an officer repeatedly misses meetings the frequency to be determined by the Executive Board, he/can be voted out of office by majority vote of the executive Board. VII.Officer Election and Removal. a)All club officers shall be elected among members and will serve a term of September to May of the Academic school year. b)Officer election will consist of the following process of nomination and election. On the first meeting of the new Academic Year the previous president if an available (an advisor may take their place) shall open the floor for nominations for each Executive Board Position. A vote will be made and the candidate will be chosen by the majority. c)In the event an officer is judged to be deficient in his/her duties (as determined by a unanimous agreement of the remaining executive officers and advisor) he may be removed by a two-thirds vote of the active organization membership. The advisor shall oversee the process of removal from office.
