“Pointing to recent turnover among high-level staff as well as issues surrounding workplace safety, members of Safe Passage’s union say their demands regarding discipline and health policies are much needed but not being met by management.”

Some employees at Safe Passage are claiming the support center’s outward image isn’t lining up with how management treats its staff internally.

SASS is excited to announce that we've reached our first tentative contract agreements with Safe Passage management, on military leave, dues check-off, and bereavement leave. We're especially proud of our language on bereavement leave, which ensures workers taking time to mourn chosen or nontraditional loved ones are treated equally to those mourning legal or biological family members.

Under Safe Passage's current policy, workers need special supervisory permission to take bereavement leave for chosen families. This forced LGBTQ workers to out themselves to supervisors, and left their right to mourn at management's discretion. While management initially defended their policy, claiming it guarded against misuse of bereavement leave, we were able to push them to accept our proposal to give all workers an equal right to mourn their loved ones.

Please follow us here for more updates on our union!
