The Spring Keystone Exams will be administered to eligible students from May 11-22. The Keystone Exams, according to PDE, “are end-of-course assessments designed to assess proficiency in various subject areas.” Those subject areas are Literature, Biology and Algebra 1. For students with an identified disability, specific accommodations, similar to those indicated in their IEP, may be appropriate for that student on one or all of the exams. Keystone Exam accommodations are determined by the IEP team at the annual meeting.

Extended School Year (ESY) is programming that provides special education services to eligible students beyond the state mandated 180 required school days. The IEP Team considers 7 different factors, largely related to a student’s regression of skills and the recoupment of those skills after an extended break from school. IEP Teams begin discussions about ESY in February if it has not already been decided. As students return from spring break, and summer approaches, if you think your student is eligible for ESY and it has not been discussed, contact your student’s Special Education Teacher to assemble an IEP Meeting to discuss if this programming is needed.

There’s nothing quite like coming together with like-minded educators.

This October has been full of opportunities for the NeuroLogic® team to learn from other leaders in this field and to share our brain-based and trauma informed content.

Grounded in neuroscience, NeuroLogic® by Lakeside’s presentations and consulting provide practical strategies to create safe, supportive learning environments that promote regulation, connection, and resilience—especially for students impacted by trauma.

Last week, Kathy Van Horn, Kat deVries, and Ruth Baugher Palmer traveled to New Orleans to connect, learn, and speak at the National Alternative Education Conference. This week, Kathy, Kat, and Nathan Swanson are in Canada facilitating Marymound’s NeuroLogic® by Lakeside Workshop Day. Also, this week, Elizabeth Poole is in Pittsburgh representing NeuroLogic® at the Paving the Way to Educational Success Conference. Next week, Kat will be headed to Chicago for the National PBIS Leadership Forum.

If you are at any of these events, please say hi! We would love to meet you in person.

Lakeside was proud to be represented at the FFTA Conference in New Orleans! Michelle Machado and Cathleen Stith-Watkins from Lakeside Global Institute led a powerful session on "Exploring the Legacy of Trauma," diving deep into the impact of transgenerational trauma and how it continues to shape lives across generations.
Justin Williams, Director of Strategic Partnerships, worked with the National Kinship Committee and spoke about the impact and vision of the committee and the path forward for kinship care.

Can you guess NeuroLogic® by Lakeside’s most requested training topic from schools?

We’ll tell you.

It’s the question: “How do we address students’ poor classroom behavior?”

At the Delaware Department of Education’s SEBW Conference, Kathryn deVries will be responding to that question in her presentation, “Brain-Based Behavioral Interventions.” NeuroLogic® proposes a paradigm shift toward identifying the student’s brain state, missing developmental skill or need for belonging and pairing it with practical behavior interventions for the classroom which address these needs.

If you’re at the conference, you also won’t want to miss the other NeuroLogic® presentation, which focuses on calming corners.

“Calming Corners: A Safe Place for Self-Regulation,” presented by Nathan Swanson, shows how classroom calming spaces can be a pivotal tool and essential part of classroom routine for helping all students learn to manage their stress and regulate their emotions and behavior.

Have you ever sat through a training about trauma that just left you feeling helpless?

We know how frustrating that can be.

At NeuroLogic®, we’re passionate about equipping professionals (and parents) with practical, brain-based tools that they can implement right away.

We’re excited to come together with other like-minded leaders at the Philadelphia Trauma Training Conference to do just that.

If you’re going to the PTTC conference, we’d love to meet you! Kathy Van Horn, Founder and Director of NeuroLogic® by Lakeside and Executive Vice President of Lakeside, will be presenting “Empowering Students Through Teaching About Trauma, Stress, and Brain Regulation.”

Find out how to equip your students to successfully navigate stress and build self-regulation skills in this session on Tuesday, July 29th from 11am to 12:15pm.
