NeuroLogic by Lakeside

NeuroLogic by Lakeside NeuroLogic by Lakeside was created to support the work being done in our various programs at Lakeside.

NeuroLogic® exists to educate and support schools and youth-focused organizations with practical, brain-based approaches to creating sustainable, supportive, and emotionally safe environments. As time progressed, we recognized significant improvements in many of our students, and saw how impactful our new interventions were. Additionally, others who would visit our programs began to see notable gr

owths, and wanted to learn how they could implement these changes within their programs. NeuroLogic now works with schools, intermediate units, after school programs, treatment centers, and other youth-focused organizations across the world. We strive to understand the unique climate of each group we work with so we can best equip them to meet the individual needs of the children they serve. Through a mixture of live in-person, web-based, and streaming services, we find unique formats for each organization we work with.

Learning puts stress on our brains, and offering brain-breaks can provide relief, as well as an opportunity for us to refocus, get energized, or become calm.

But there are right and wrong ways to do this.

❌ Watch out for these 5 brain-break mistakes…

✅ And keep in mind these 8 positive tips!

It’s late April, and many teachers are feeling fatigued and worn out. Administrators, now is a good time to encourage your staff in little ways. Our brains are hardwired for connection, and a sense of belonging promotes motivation. It doesn’t have to be a waffle luncheon, but it could be.

Here are a few ideas:
1. End a staff meeting early to give teachers time to catch up or just breathe.
2. Bring snacks to a staff meeting. (Bonus points for bringing healthy, savory, and sweet options.)
3. Assign partners who put positive post-it notes on each other’s desk for a month.
4. Make a “shout out board” where administrators can celebrate staff wins.

Behavior is a form of communication.

A brain-based lens helps us understand what a student’s behavior is communicating.

At NeuroLogic®, we take a curious approach to student behavior, seeking to identify potential underlying needs and meet them.

Sometimes we need to put ourselves in our students' shoes.

At Lakeside Schools we teach students about how their bodies and brains respond to stress, and how simple interventions (like hydration, flexible seating, fidgets, or coloring) can help. This knowledge of how their brains work, combined with regulation resources and relational connections, provides a buffer for high school stress.

Consider some of these brain-based ideas for your school. Our NeuroLogic® coaches can help you identify and implement changes!

Walkie talkies can be great tools, but they can also present problems. Try using a code system like the one we share in this video to maintain confidentiality and keep the students in your classroom regulated.

Here are the codes:

🔴 Red = medical situation

🟡 Yellow = behavioral situation

🟢 Green = environmental or safety situation

1 = not very urgent

2 = semi-urgent

3 = urgent

So, for example, if you have a classroom of kindergarteners and one peed her pants, you could pick up the walkie talkie and just say, “Red two” – and the school nurse will know that there is a semi-urgent situation that needs her attention, without the other students overhearing what happened.

When every kid gets a participation trophy, the trophies have limited value.

How do we celebrate and motivate each student without giving out academic “participation trophies”?

Take time to notice and communicate students’ individual progress and the work that they’ve done. When a student completes more problems on a homework assignment than they typically do, or when they come to you for support, celebrate the specific effort they are investing in their academics.

Help them see that their hard work is valuable, regardless of the outcome.

Do you ever see people posting picturesque, well-resourced classrooms and think, “They must have quite the funding. There’s no way that’s happening at my school.”

It’s true that regulating resources (like fidgets and flexible seating) can be quite expensive (some a lot more than others).

But there are ways to get around the costs.

We often encourage admin to seek out grants for your whole school or district. But sometimes you have to get creative.

This DIY fidget bracelet project just takes a few minutes to make and is a great activity to do with your students. You can get enough supplies for 45 bracelets at Dollar Tree for just $3.75.

Save this video to make these fidgets with your class, then send us photos of your creations!

Do you have students that seem to give up quickly? Some get frustrated, others shut down, and others just ask for help over and over.

Here’s a brain-based perspective: Often the students who look like they’re not persevering are simply overwhelmed by challenges that are outside of their window of stress tolerance.

A students’ ability to tolerate stress is impacted by things such as past trauma, current difficulties, mental health challenges, and other factors like the presence or absence of relational supports and resources.

A great way to decrease academic stress is breaking the material down into smaller chunks. Instead of a page with ten math problems, give the student a sheet that has three math problems, then encourage them when they finish it and provide the next three problems.

Many of the teachers we work with tell us it is difficult to get the help they need. Some teachers don't know how to tell administrators what they need while others feel like they are speaking but not being heard.

At NeuroLogic we work with administrators and teachers to identify the challenges they both face. Our goal is to provide practical brain-based solutions that be applied in your school today. We offer professional development training but also coaching. Our coaches help school staff speak in a way that others want to listen and listen in a way that others want to speak.

Shout out to iam_susanaalba for the video concept.

One of the best things we can do for students is care for ourselves. When our own basic needs are met, we’re better able to self-regulate during stressful situations, which allows us to provide students with the support they need.

Do you have any tips for taking care of your needs at work?
