On June 20, 2024, East Allegheny Meals on Wheels celebrated its 50th anniversary!
The host church, Linway United Presbyterian Church, graciously took a leap of faith 50 years ago and offered its facility and support to a new non-profit, all-volunteer program where food is cooked daily and driven right to the recipient's door, hot and ready to eat.
Beulah Lowden and Virginia Beswick, the pioneering mothers, faced skepticism when they initially presented their vision. "You'll never find enough volunteers to cook, pack, and deliver hot meals 5 days a week," was a common response. Despite these doubts, they persevered, and their legacy thrives in our successful program.
East Allegheny Meals on Wheels is honored to serve our community, providing a vital service to residents in North Versailles, East McKeesport, and Wilmerding. Our program, run by over 50 dedicated, generous, faithful, hard-working men and women of all ages, operates 5 days a week, 52 weeks a year, including holidays, ensuring no one goes without a hot meal.
Currently, we serve between 35 and 40 clients a day and would welcome more. If you know someone who could benefit from our service, please share our phone number (412-327-6908). Signing up is a breeze and can be done with a quick 5-minute phone call. The only requirement is a person's inability to shop and cook for themselves.
We recognize and thank our neighborhood churches, organizations, and individuals who have financially supported our program. Although we have encountered hard times over the years, their donations have allowed us to reach this amazing milestone.
