Wilson Pond Swanzey, NH It Doesn't Get Any Better Than This

Want healthier lakes? Start in your own yard!

Spring is the perfect time to plan your garden—and what you plant can make a real difference for the lakes we all love. Native plants do more than just look beautiful—they help protect water quality and support local wildlife.

Here’s why planting native matters:

🌿 Protects soil – Plant roots hold soil in place, preventing erosion and keeping sediment and pollutants out of lakes.

🌧 Filters runoff – Vegetation acts like a natural filter, trapping pollutants before they reach the water.

💧 Absorbs water – Plants help rain soak into the ground instead of rushing into lakes as runoff.

🦋 Supports wildlife – Native plants provide food and habitat for birds, pollinators, and other important species.

And if you live near the water, shoreline plants are especially important. A vegetated shoreline buffer helps prevent erosion, filter runoff water, and create habitat for fish and wildlife.

✨ The best part? You don’t need to live on a lake to make an impact—what happens on your property can affect lakes miles away.

Our water level is rising due to the rain and snow melt. Simply, the water flowing in is exceeding the water going out. This will likely mean dock structures presumed to be out of the water during the winter months may be in harm’s way once the ice starts shifting. I guess we’ll have to wait and see.

This is not only important to Wilson Pond, but all of Swanzey and beyond. A number of your neighbors have worked hard to reach compromise and endorsement from the Planning Board. Please vote Yes to Amendment 1 of Article 2 come March.

On March 10, please vote YES on Article 2, Amendment 1—for an all-new Wetlands Conservation District ordinance. This ordinance—created over many months by the Conservation Commission and the Planning Board—will better protect our most important wetlands by creating setbacks or buffers from development. It will also allow for creativity in siting sensible development, through a new conditional use permit system. Read the whole thing on our Conservation Commission page at Swanzeynh.gov.

Wetlands are some of my favorite places for bird and wildlife watching. Do you enjoy visiting the Airport Road marshes? Dillant-Hopkins Airport’s big marshes are some of our most important “Emergent Wetlands” in town, scoring in the top 10% for several factors on Moosewood Ecological’s 2024 wetlands evaluation. Emergent wetlands are where you find rooted plants emerging from the water, like cattails, reeds, pickerelweed and arrowhead. Most of this dies back in winter, and re-emerges in spring. These wetlands are super important for local wildlife—from American bitterns to bobcats to beetles—as well as flood storage and trapping sediments and nutrients before they can become pollutants.

What's the coolest thing you've seen at the Airport marshes. Tell me yours and I'll tell you mine!

I was told this fish was caught on Wilson Pond today, the face of the child was blurred since I don’t know the child or family. Either way that’s a big fish. 😊
