"We begin to remember not just that you died, but that you lived. And that your life gave us memories too beautiful to forget." Author Unknown

Thank you, Sue Kreutter. You dedicated your life to equine in need. You gave us all, horses and humans, the greatest gifts of a lifetime.

The horses of Phoenix Rising Equine Rescue and Sanctuary have been rehomed. Please keep all in your thoughts and prayers as they adjust to their new lives. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts for your support.

Peace and love. Peace and love. Peace and love.

As we head deeper into December, a traditional time of reflection and gratitude, the Phoenix Rising Board of Directors and volunteers wish to send love and gratitude to all those who have supported our efforts throughout the decades. A very special message of thanks goes to the individuals and organizations who answered our call for help when the Phoenix Rising founder/owner/operator recently passed away. People we did not know until our crisis hit, reached out offering support in a variety of forms. Places like PJ’s Ponies and Sumner Brook Farm Equine Rescue and Sanctuary asked, “How can we help?”. Individuals from Connecticut, California, Rhode Island, New York, Massachusetts, New Jersey, and Texas offered donations and told us they were keeping us in their thoughts. All of you (and you know who you are) got us through some of the darkest days we ever experienced. Thank you – from the bottom of our hearts.

Phoenix Rising is still in the process of dissolving operations. Your positive thoughts, good energy, and love are still needed, as our horses find their way to their new homes and begin to settle into new surroundings.

If you are so inclined to support a worthy cause this holiday season, we encourage you to consider an equine focused 501 c 3. There are many throughout the nation who are working tirelessly to heal horses who others have let down. Please, check out an equine rescue/sanctuary near you and perhaps even make a donation in honor of a Phoenix Rising horse. Many helped us in the last few months. We would like to try to give back in some way – by shouting out those who we know do great work and encouraging all to give what you can, adopt, sponsor, or volunteer. Thank you.

Here's to the organizations we know and love.

The Old Man, the Old Guy, Cha-cho-lot, Cha-cho, Chah-key continues to defy all odds, ignore age, and create liars out of those who say, "he is too old". He arrived at Phoenix Rising with his body broken and his spirit strong. Throughout the 2 plus years he was with us, he defined the phrase "never give up".

After moving to a new location recently (against the advice of many because "he is too old"), his nights have been filled with warm bedtime snacks. His days have been filled with leisurely grazing in a pristine pasture. The whole time he has acted as if he has been in this new place his whole life. He seems to be saying, "Yes. It's about time. I will take this. Thank you."

Thanks to those who stepped up and committed to this old man. Thanks to the people who found great pleasure in giving this old man a grand last chapter. Thanks to the volunteers who carefully cared for this old man, ensuring that he arrived where he is today.

We love you Chocolat. You taught us so much in the time we knew you. Your life lessons are invaluable. We will hold memories of you in our hearts, always. Be well.

Our sweet and sassy, diva queen exited the gate of Phoenix Rising, recently. She landed in her new home and is now settling in. Another very bittersweet day for all associated with our sanctuary.

There were tears of sadness and tears of happiness, as this red-headed mare stepped off the trailer into her new home. She took a look around and heavily breathed in the air. The look in her eyes said it all, "I trust you, but I do not recognize this place. Help me understand."

The last 2 months have been difficult to say the least, as we struggle to say good-bye to our herd members. One thing we are certain of, though, is the very generous spirit of some people. People we knew and people we never met before stepped up to help our Sierra Sunshine find her way. Today, she is in a strange place without her herd members, but she is surrounded by love and people who want to make this all okay for her. That fills our hearts with such hope and joy. To those who made sure Sierra was able to continue on, we thank you. You know who you are and we will forever be grateful.

Be well, Sierra. We will carry a piece of you with us in our hearts always - wherever we go and whatever we do. We are honored to know you. It was a privilege to care for you.

May the long-time sun shine upon you.
All love surround you.
And the pure light within you, guide your way on.

The Phoenix Rising Board of Directors and our volunteers share this note of heartfelt appreciation.

At this time of great struggle, the generosity and care we've experienced (from both friends and complete strangers) has led to incredible offers for our horses. Discussions about the future of our very special equine are ongoing. One thing is for sure, though - Their futures look much brighter today because of all of you.

Please keep the prayers, positive thoughts, and good energy coming our way. It is working. We are feeling it. All we can say at the moment is thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you, thank you. There is once again hope for the Phoenix Rising horses!

Phoenix Rising Equine Rescue and Sanctuary is dissolving operations due to the unexpected death of its founder/operator. We've scrambled the last few weeks to keep the horses who reside at Phoenix Rising safe, healthy, and feeling the love. The generosity of people has overwhelmed us, as we believe just about all of our horses have a safe, loving place to move to - a life after Phoenix Rising. Please keep the prayers, good thoughts, and good energy coming - that all horses will truly be safe and loved, again.

That brings us to this special guy. Chocolat is our oldest resident with a few health issues. In his mind though, he is a teenager and has more life to live. Choco has a sponsor willing to cover his cost of care. Phoenix Rising has volunteers willing to provide care for him (if he remains local to the North Stonington, CT area). What we do not have is a physical place where he can live. We need a stall and private paddock (local area) for the last chapter of this boy's life.

Please, if you have an empty barn that you are not using and would love to see a horse in it again...This is that chance. If you have a barn that could benefit from a wise old man with some s***k, this is your chance. We are willing to consider how to make any potential situation work. We have the will. Reach out to us and let's talk.

Thank you.

Here is our Lucy girl, snoozing in the sun this past weekend. While she enjoyed her nap, we worked hard to find her a place to live out her remaining days.

This girl is a great companion/babysitter horse with a few medical issues that are controlled.

Help us find Lucy a place to call home, please.

23-year-old Quarter Horse/Shetland Pony mare
Approximately 14 hands
Barefoot and good for farrier
Up to date on her vaccines and dentals
LOVES to be fussed over and has not had much of that in her life.
Her medication controls her Cushing's
Her ointment and her mask controls her Uveitis

UPDATE: Today, our Laddie Hanover started a new chapter. After being left without options when the owner of Phoenix Rising passed away unexpectedly, we feared the worst for the boy who we lovingly refer to as our Force of Nature. What began as a scary search for a soft place in which Laddie could land, ended today with happy tears as we watched our Laddie boy take his first steps in a new, safe, loving home. We truly did not think we would ever find what we found for him. His new home is an answer to a prayer.

Thank you to the Phoenix Rising volunteers who for well over a decade (perhaps about 15 years) took such good care of this beauty. Thank you to those who now take over for us and who will continue to be sure this boy thrives.

Be well, Laddie Hanover. Love, light, and protection to you, always. You will forever remain a part of us. Thank you for your gifts and the lessons you taught us all.

---

Take a good look at this boy. His eyes say it all. He is cautious, but so wants to love. The volunteers at Phoenix Rising have always done what we can for Laddie. It is no secret, though...He misses having his own person. Maybe the crisis at Phoenix Rising will be a blessing in disguise for him and he will somehow find that certain someone. Please help our Laddie.

23-year old Standardbred gelding, dark brown, approximately 15 hands, cannot be ridden due to an old injury and arthritis, barefoot and good for the farrier, needs an experienced person, up-to-date on vaccines and dentals.

Due to a death, this boy needs help.
Please continue to share out Laddie and consider opening your heart and home. We know there is a person out there who is able to answer our call for help and give this boy what he now needs.
