North Smithfield SELAC Special Education Local Advisory Committee for students who receive Special Education in N.Smithfield

The North Smithfield Special Education Local Advisory Committee (NS SELAC) is a parent-led group involved in or concerned with the education of students with disabilities who are eligible for special education through an Individualized Education Program (IEP), Section 504, or currently receiving services under the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act (IDEA) within the district of North Smit

hfield, RI. We serve as advocates in partnership with parents of students with disabilities to ensure that they receive the entitlements provided to them under state and federal law. We work to support and protect all policies, rules, and regulations that may affect the special education population in our community. We develop programs and communication within the community to encourage understanding, acceptance, and inclusion of children with disabilities. This includes forums and workshops to improve educational, recreational, vocational, and social programs for our children. We partner with School Administration to determine appropriate programs and services that children with all abilities are entitled to. We take into consideration what the children’s needs are for their success while in the classroom, throughout the community, and into adulthood.

House Education Committee approves Rep. O’Brien’s dyslexia bill

STATE HOUSE – The House Education Committee yesterday approved legislation sponsored by Rep. William W. O’Brien that would update the definition of “dyslexia” in the Rhode Island Literacy and Dropout Prevention Act.
“As we learn more about dyslexia and its characteristics, it’s important that we update our laws to reflect the current science relating to this learning disability. As someone who deals with dyslexia myself, I believe it is important to actively diagnose and treat our students who also suffer from dyslexia, so that their learning may not be hampered. Nothing is more important in a school setting than reading, so it’s crucial to do everything we can to support our dyslexic students,” said Representative O’Brien (D-Dist. 54, North Providence).
The legislation (2026-H 7909) would redefine “dyslexia” to mean a specific learning disability characterized by difficulties in word reading and/or spelling that involve accuracy, speed, or both and vary depending on the orthography.
The bill now heads to the House for consideration.

Hello Happy Sunday!

We were so happy about all of the engagement at our Quarterly Meeting despite Technical Difficulties. Thank you for being patient with us!

At our meeting Open Forum Friday was announced for this upcoming Friday night 11/7 at 6:30 pm location TBA! This will be a less formal time for parents to connect with other parents in our North Smithfield Family or have some one on one time with us to address any concerns or for you to share your ideas for SELAC with us! This will be a great opportunity to build our community and spend some time with others that we might not get to meet otherwise in our busy lives. We are very excited to see you all but we need your help!

In an effort to meet your needs we need to know whether you can attend and also if you would like the option to bring your little ones or have this as an adults only night! Please vote below so that we can set a venue and accommodate your needs. We will be looking into partnering with Best Buddies or some other volunteers to have some supervision for our little ones if wanted and some sensory friendly activities. We'd like to see as many of you as possible so please let your voice be heard in the comments below.

Please Respond with either of the following:

I'm in! / Adults only or Kids Optional
I can't make it but would love more events like this / Adults only or Kid Optional

Looking forward to your feedback and hope to see you there!!!
