Ceramics is having a real moment in contemporary art.

Artists today are using clay far beyond traditional pottery, creating sculptural and conceptual works that explore identity, memory, history, and materiality itself.

In a world dominated by screens, the physicality of clay, touch, texture, pressure, and process feels more meaningful than ever.

Marina Abdo Alcantara is our newest studio artist! Through assemblage and found objects, she uncovers connections within everyday materials and transforms them into personal narratives. As an interdisciplinary conceptual artist, Marina works across a variety of mediums such as sculpture, installation, video, performance, and writing.

We are excited to see what kind of works she creates at SPAACES!

Every Tuesday from now until August we'll be going back in time to our early exhibitions before we were known as SPAACES.

We'll start things off by looking at Organic Geometry! Prior to our non profit status our founder Marianne Chapel ran an artist gallery out of her studio, which was called Mchapel Projects.

Organic Geometry was a group show featuring artists, Marianne Chapel, Cynthia Mason, Laine Nixon, and Jill Taffet. It opened March 17, 2017 and was the first exhibition at Mchapel Projects.

Is Contemporarty Art in Crisis?

Recently the MIT Press published an article titled," New York Real Estate and the Ruin of American Art." The article explores how rising costs and market pressure reshape the conditions for artists within New York City, and how organizations like SPAACES matter more than ever.

We were fortunate to have Rafiat Olamide Dabiri, a student at the Indiana University Lilly Family School of Philanthropy, intern at SPAACES. Rafiat oversaw our social media campaign surrrounding the 2026 Giving Challenge. Her hard work and dedication made our campaign a success!

We are deeply grateful to The Patterson Foundation for helping make this partnership possible.

Where the season began.

On October 2025 we kicked off the season with Traces of Change, an exhibition that set a thoughtful and ambitious tone for everything that followed. Through their work artists Jill Hoffman-Kowal, Elizabeth Sher, and Eszter Sziksz reflected on social, cultural, and environmental transformation.

Opening night featured a special perfomance by People Trippin, which unfolded as a collaborative work by musician Tihda Vongkoth of Modern Marimba and spoken word artist Melanie Lavender with special guest Cee Cee Robinson.

As we look forward to our next season we are excited to support artists, expand on ideas, and welcoming new moments of conneciton!
