Just passing through! This Solitary Sandpiper stopped at Weil Preserve to rest and refuel during its southward migration. True to its name, this shorebird is often found traveling and foraging alone, frequently at inland freshwater wetlands rather than along the shore.

This isn’t a mushroom... and it doesn’t need sunlight to survive. 👻

Ghost pipe (Monotropa uniflora) is one of our forests’ most fascinating native plants. Instead of making its own food through photosynthesis, it gets nutrients through an underground network of fungi connected to nearby trees.

These ghostly blooms appear for only a brief window each summer, so spotting one is always a treat.

If you find one on the trail, leave it where it grows. Ghost pipe quickly turns black once picked, and leaving it undisturbed helps others enjoy this incredible native plant.
