North Salem Open Land Foundation welcomed 230 guests to Bluegrass in the Meadow on September 26 at Weil Preserve in North Salem, celebrating the land we love and honoring the memory of dear friend Carol Goldberg. The evening raised more than $500,000 to establish the Carol Goldberg Land Preservation Fund, dedicated to preserving future open land in North Salem. Guests enjoyed an evening of bluegrass music, great food, and community while coming together to celebrate Carol’s legacy and support the future of conservation in North Salem.

This past Friday, we had the opportunity to present at the Land Trust Alliance’s Rally 2026 National Land Conservation Conference in Denver!

Our session, Neighbors in Conservation: Building a Hyper-Regional Stewardship Network, shared the story of a partnership between four neighboring land trusts: North Salem Open Land Foundation, Westchester Land Trust, Hudson Highlands Land Trust, and Pound Ridge Land Conservancy.

Over the past year, our four organizations have worked together to share equipment, knowledge, training opportunities, and an extra set of hands when needed.

At Rally, we shared some of the projects we’ve tackled together, what we’ve learned along the way, and how working with our neighbors has helped each of our organizations accomplish more.

It’s exciting to show what can happen when neighboring organizations start a conversation and show up for one another.

Spotted on the preserve: a Red-legged Grasshopper!

This native grasshopper is a common resident of meadows and other grassy habitats. 🌿

Fun fact: Grasshoppers are an important part of the food web—turning plant material into a meal for birds, small mammals, reptiles, and other wildlife. Even the smallest preserve residents help keep an ecosystem connected!

Ever come across something like this on one of our preserves?

It may not look like much, but this crumpled white casing is actually a snapping turtle eggshell! Unlike a bird’s hard, brittle egg, snapping turtle eggs have more flexible shells that can collapse and wrinkle after the hatchling emerges.

A small sign that a new generation of wildlife is making its way onto the preserve! 🌿
