Anatomy Academy Anatomy Academy is an outreach and research program to combat childhood obesity through educational intervention. You can access our short 11 min.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the prevalence of childhood obesity in children and adolescents has nearly tripled in the last 30 years, and in an effort to combat this trend, the CDC is encouraging communities to enact policy, system, and environmental initiatives thatfocus on obesity prevention in at-risk populations. In response to this challenge, graduate stu

dents in medical, public health, and public policy curriculums at UCLA developed a school-based health intervention called "Anatomy Academy." Launched in June 2012, at Stella Middle Charter Academy (SMCA, Los Angeles, CA), Anatomy Academy aims to supplement existing physical education curricula at elementary schools with an interactive and hands-on learning experience with the ultimate goal to engage elementary-age students with immediately applicable biological scientific concepts, nurture their scientific curiosity, and encourage the pursuit of higher education, all the while helping them develop healthy habits along the way. UCLA medical students, dental students and undergraduate students assist in the program by teaching the 5th grade students in small group settings, not only granting them an opportunity to teach clinical content to an underserved population, but also affording the 5th graders an opportunity to work closely with motivated and successful mentors. The curriculum is designed to educate children about their bodies and the importance of gaining and maintaining a healthy lifestyle inside the classroom with the usage of anatomical models and hands-on activities then reinforce these health concepts outside of the classroom during a physical component, when educators and participants engage in sports and recreational activities together. video through YouTube: http://youtu.be/s5nl3WXageg

Hello,

I’m writing to you about docket EPA-HQ-OAR-2023-0072-0001, the new standards for greenhouse gas emissions from fossil fuel-fired electric generating units.

As a medical researcher and medical educator I am concerned about the increasing toll climate change is having on the physical and psychological health of individuals in my community and around the world. I am one of those victims, having grown up as a child in a highly polluted city and developing asthma. My family moved to a much less polluted city as a result, then unfortunately we faced bigotry and racism throughout the rest of my youth. The EPA can help future generations by minimizing diseases and disorders that are rooted in climate change effects.

I’m glad to see EPA using its most effective tool for addressing climate pollution, and thank you for putting forward this strong foundation. However, there are several key changes that are within EPA’s legal boundaries that must be made to ensure these standards meet the full threat and urgency of the climate crisis.

I strongly urge EPA to update the standards for new gas plants by: urgently requiring a 90% reduction standard (not beginning in 2035, but immediately), and by setting a stronger standard for peaker and intermediate plants that also begins right away.

EPA must also update standards for existing gas plants by: lowering the minimum capacity for plants covered by this rule from 300MW (which would leave 86% of 2035 gas plant capacity unregulated under these rules) to 100MW, and by moving the start date from 2035 to 2030.

For existing coal plants, I urge EPA to change the retirement exemption from 2040 to 2028 so that the dangerous emissions from these plants are reduced on a timeline that better reflects the urgency of the climate crisis and the impact of these plants on our communities.

I must also point out that the Congressional Review Act is a real threat to these critical standards, and EPA must protect the legacy and impact of its important work by finalizing this rule before March, 2024.

Finally, EPA has an obligation to protect our communities by proposing further rules that create environmental safeguards and monitoring standards for CO2 transport and storage.

With these changes, I believe these standards will go down as some of the most important steps ever taken by the Biden Administration and EPA to take on climate pollution from the power sector, and I’m so grateful that you have taken this important first step with a strong proposal.

Sincerely,
Jonathan J. Wisco, PhD

Anatomy Academy is making a comeback! After 18 months online at Salt Lake Arts Academy, Spectrum Academy, and Gardner Pilot Academy, last semester we went hybrid last spring and this fall we are going almost fully in person! Although we’re super excited to be back in the classroom, we learned through the pandemic that classroom teaching CAN be done online, even with a highly engaging curriculum!
