Here’s some “Treestory” for you- that is, trees that have history and a story to tell!
Have you ever noticed the Trees along North Port Blvd. that are south of Appomattox? They create a beautiful canopy and serene setting for all to enjoy.
But are you aware of how those trees got there?
Over 20 years ago, that entire stretch to
Greenwood Ave. had only Washingtonian Palms. So members of People for Trees’ members who were also City of North Beautification and Tree Council board members rallied to have trees planted along that barren stretch.
The plan also included giving people the opportunity to “adopt” a tree that would include having an engraved brick installed at the base of the tree.
In addition, People for Trees planted a number of native trees such as Florida Elm and Bald Cypress to add to the project.
So the next time you drive down that road be sure to take a really good look at those trees, in particular look for those Bald Cypress and Elm Trees (easily spotted as they are the trees that are not Oaks!) and know it only took a small group of dedicated people about 20 years ago to make that happen for us to enjoy today.

4th of July Decorators needed!
People for Trees has annually’put up the red white and blue at some of their project areas such as along their Tree Walk location (located along the access road south of North Port Blvd.), the North Port post office, and the street trees along N. Salford Blvd.
If you would like to be involved for this year‘s red, white, and blue decorating, please contact Alice White at 941-468-2486. Day and time will be determined by those who volunteer but it is anticipated that the decorations be up no later than June 20.

Featuring: The Shady Lady Black Olive Tree.
While it is NOT a Florida native tree , it is a wonderful Florida-friendly tree and should not be confused with what is the Florida native Black Olive tree.
Looking at these photos, one can see why it has earned the name of “shady” lady!
It does provide for an effective shade tree in areas that would be considered challenging for tree plantings.
It is a deciduous tree that has very small paper thin leaves that seem to dissolve when they fall off the tree during autumn.
The photos are examples of these trees that have been planted throughout the area. (Click on the photo for the captions that will tell you the locations.)
Please note. Being that these are not Florida native trees, they are not available through People for Trees but they align very much with the group’s ongoing promotion for decades of creating Florida- friendly yards, since 1997!

Have you seen the beautiful Firecracker plant at the North Port post office?
Members of People for Trees installed Florida friendly plants on either side of the building entrance as well as in the median strip for the outside mailbox about 10 years ago. We do plan on installing ground covers and add a few more plants within that median strip - volunteers needed? You bet! Contact Alice White 941-468-2486.
People for Trees was also invited to speak with Garden Club at The Gallery in North Port about Florida friendly plants.
A few of those members had some real comfortable front row seats!
(Also Pictured: PfT member Kimberly Glantz and Chair, Alice White, with a sampling of the plants that were discussed such as Blue plumbago, native fire bush, and Porterweed.)

Have you seen the Beautiful Sweetgum Trees along Sumter Boulevard in North Port?
These wonderful native shade trees were included in the landscape plan for Sumter when it was 4-laned and divided (between 1998-2009)as a direct result of the influence of People for Trees’ advocacy about the OTHER native trees that were suitable for this area besides Live Oaks.
That roadway also includes native Bald Cypress,Slash Pines, Southern Red Cedar, East Palatka Holly Trees, and an outstanding Sycamore tree (located near Appomattox).

I am truly humbled to receive this recognition, especially for the second time, previously in 2013.
It’s also rewarding to see many more people today who are aware of and appreciate the importance of our native tree canopy and natural environment. When I had first organized People for Trees back in 1997, it surely was not easy being green!
“ The best time to plant a tree was 20 years ago. The second best time is today.”
Plant that tree!
