I wanted to introduce myself and share a bit about the Tampa Bay Coastal Master Plan, as you may not be very familiar with it. My name is Katie Mastenbrook, and I work with the National Wildlife Federation, which leads community outreach for the Tampa Bay Coastal Master Plan. The TBCMP is the first regional flooding adaptation plan in the state of Florida, covering communities from Citrus to Sarasota County led by the Tampa Bay Regional Planning Council and partners. The goal of the plan is to enhance regional resilience by addressing flooding impacts through a coordinated, data driven, and community-based planning process. Over the course of this four-year initiative, the plan is identifying flood vulnerable areas, prioritizing restoration and flood reduction projects, and helping guide long term adaptation strategies. We are currently in year two of this effort.

As part of this work, we have been engaging communities across the region through events and presentations, and training local partners to help lead flood listening sessions. These sessions are designed to share more information about the TBCMP while also capturing community lived experiences and observations related to chronic flooding from rainfall, sea level rise, tidal influences, and storm surge.

We have a upcoming Flood Listening Session on June 22 , 2026 from 5:45-7:45 PM at the Shannon Staub Library in North Port , the registration link here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/community-flood-listening-session-tickets-1991379847731?aff=oddtdtcreator.

The listening sessions are to hear from all community members that are experiencing chronic flooding both inland and coastal from rainfall, sea-level rise, tidal and storm surge, and we are trying to pick as many central locations as possible to host. Participants will be provided a light dinner and will also receive a $15 gift-card for Walmart for participation.

Florida fireflies are becoming harder to spot every season and most homeowners don't realize their yard is part of the reason. These plants give fireflies what they need to complete their full life cycle right where you can watch them.

We know that there are approximately 350 other animal species who share the gopher tortoise burrow with the tortoise. Rabbits, armadillos, and so on. But to see a bird in front of a burrow is different yet here's a picture of one that dropped on by. Pretty cool!

Rat poison not only impacts burrowing owls but also owls in general and other birds of prey. A poisoned rodent being ingested can also harm bobcats and other mammals. Plz think twice before using these poisonous products.

The burrowing owl, Cape Coral's official city bird, plays a vital role in pest control by tackling invasive rats and cockroaches. However, using rat poison could inadvertently harm these helpful creatures.
