You ask how was school, and you get one word: good. Tonight, try three specific questions instead, one at a time. Ask what made you laugh today, and wait for the answer. Ask what was hard today, and let your child answer fully before you respond. Ask who you sat with at lunch, and listen to the whole story. Three simple questions, asked one after another, often open up a conversation where one word used to be enough. Save this for later.
