CALL TO ACTION: Protect the Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund
All veterans and concerned citizens are urged to contact your State Senator and ask them to vote NO on LB1072.
The Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund (NVAF) was established in 1921, largely through proceeds donated by World War I veterans. It exists for one purpose only: to provide temporary emergency assistance to veterans, their spouses, and dependents when hardship disrupts their ability to meet basic needs.
The fund assists with necessities such as food, fuel, shelter, transportation, childcare, clothing, funeral expenses, and medical needs. All income from the fund is used directly for aid, not administrative expenses. The NVAF is governed by statute and administered through County Veterans Service Officers. For decades, this systemP worked effectively with minimal taxpayer burden.
That fund is now being diverted from its original intent.
In 2023, the Legislature amended statute to remove $8.2 million from the principal of the Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund to finance projects outside its mission, including a veterans cemetery and POW/MIA research. While these are worthy causes, the Veterans Aid Fund was never intended to finance them. This action set a dangerous precedent.
Now it is happening again.
LB1072 proposes an additional $5 million transfer from the Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund:
$2.5 million before June 30, 2026
$2.5 million before June 30, 2027
These withdrawals weaken a fund that exists solely to help veterans and their families during emergencies.
We urge our elected officials to vote NO on LB1072 and to introduce legislation that explicitly bars any future diversion, reallocation, or overreach involving the Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund. Additionally, funds already removed should be restored.
The Nebraska Veterans Aid Fund was created by veterans, for veterans. It must remain protected and available when it is needed most.
