THIS THURSDAY @ 6-7 PM at the cafeteria in Atfalati Ridge Elementary School in North Plains (doors open at 5:30 PM).

Please come and share your thoughts about North Plains with Oregon Public Broadcasting's Think Out Loud. It's important to emphasize that it's NOT that the city doesn't want to grow, it just wants to do so intentionally, taking only as much land as is needed and fiscally prudent, using up-to-date population projections, providing housing for income levels that need it, and focusing first on our main street for economic development. Data centers do not belong right next to an elementary school and homes. And the city should not subsidize very profitable businesses like data centers, or businesses that generate little tax revenue like warehouses and data centers. Great news! Janeen Sollman has conceded to Myrna Muñoz for Oregon Senate District 15!

New ballot returns Thursday evening showed Forest Grove educator Myrna Muñoz has unseated sitting state Sen. Janeen Sollman in a Washington County legislative race that became a referendum on education funding, labor power and data centers.

Lately Janeen Sollman has made some misleading claims that Myrna financially benefits from data centers through her husband’s job. Myrna has consistently spoken out against data centers and does NOT want them in our community. Let the record be clear—Janeen Sollman is the one who has attempted to pave over farmland for data centers and industrial land SIX TIMES! Don’t be fooled by Sollman’s misdirection and lies! Vote for Myrna Munoz for Oregon Senate District 15.

LETTER TO THE EDITOR BY AARON NICHOLS: I live and farm in Senate District 15, where Myrna Muñoz is challenging incumbent Sen. Janeen Sollman, (“Can Oregon’s progressive left unseat 2 of the Legislature’s most moderate Democrats?” April 22). A recent article underemphasized key points distinguishing the candidates.

In our district, it is hard to overestimate the furor over SB 1586; Sollman was one of the bill’s chief sponsors. Had it passed, it would have turned 1,700 acres of Oregon’s best farmland over to industrial development — likely following a pattern of low job, high impact development in Hillsboro, including data centers. Initially, SB 1586 also proposed larger tax breaks for an enterprise zone tax credit often used by data centers.

Many saw this as a continuation of job-losing development policies that Sollman and others have sold us for decades.
I question the article’s statement that Sollman and Muñoz share opposition to Trump administration policies. People in our area have experienced U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement terrorism. Although Sollman opposed ICE actions, her energy in Salem focused on SB 1586. Muñoz says this leadership gap brought her into the race.

Sollman announced in March that she would not push the bill forward, based on feedback and a narrow legislative timeline. Now — with a primary challenge, a petition for a Washington County data center moratorium, and talk of pausing some new data center permits in Hillsboro — Sollman says she welcomes these discussions, supports a sunset on related tax credits and is pushing for data center accountability.

It leaves us wondering how durable this attitude would be after the election.

If Janeen Sollman's door knockers knock on your door in the next week, ask them if they're paid—they are! It's hard to get volunteer door knockers when you're pro development of prime farmland and help roll out the red carpet for data centers! Do you know whose door knockers volunteer, because it's the right thing to do and they love their candidate? Myrna Muñoz's volunteers! Myrna's volunteers love this region and stand up firmly against data centers! Vote for Myrna Muñoz for Oregon Senate District 15!
