Do you remember the "Grape Patch," also known as the Pleasant View Welfare Farm? If you live in Mountain Vineyard Estates (750 W.), the soil under your house and yard was once likely part of a productive hillside vineyard.
Each autumn, neighbors would gather by the hundreds to pluck dark purple fruit from the plants. It would then be placed into bins and hauled away to be turned into grape juice. Year after year, the farm's harvests were used to help struggling families who faced food insecurity.
In this photo taken by Alma Glen Ellis, shared by Maree Wadman, Wallace D. Sjoblom guides volunteers in the planting of thousands of grape vines. Mr. Sjoblom managed the farm for over two decades, from its creation until the vines were removed to make way for new friends and neighbors.
As you might have heard, Pleasant View is turning 175 this year and the P.V. Heritage Foundation is creating a community scrapbook to help celebrate.
Do you have any memories or photos of the Grape Patch you could share? Any pictures of the hot dog harvests? Photos of the sign over the entrance?
We would love to read and see them, but it needs to happen soon!
