It has been 10 years since the Pulse Nightclub shooting, one of the deadliest domestic terrorist attacks on US soil.

On this day, we remember yet another reason why we celebrate Pride. Homophobia and transphobia have not disappeared. In many ways, it has reared its ugly head once again into the mainstream. Despite adversity, we must not allow the hate our community faces to scare us into obscurity. For the 49, we must continue to live on, proudly. Here are their names.

We’re so proud of all they’ve accomplished and grateful to have been part of their journeys. Each one is a testament of what youth can accomplish if they are supported in their mental wellbeing and identity. Their hard work, resilience, and dedication have brought them to this milestone, and we can’t wait to see what comes next.

There has been a cultural shift regarding LGBTQ acceptance. We see it. Our young people see it.

From “ally” corporations to state and federal governments to everyday peers, there has been a concentrated effort to label q***rness as abnormal, immoral, and even terroristic.

This is nothing new. The truth is this is just another wave of homophobia and transphobia, a backlash against the progress made in the most recent decade. We are at our most united and our most visible, a threat to those in power. Q***r youth represent a new way of living, of embodying internal truths, and innate dignity. And that scares many people.

Where others have decided to stay quiet, we are proud of our name and what we stand for. We believe that q***r youth should also be able to be proud of who they are, to say their name with authority, and live authentically.

This Pride Month, do not dim your light. Do not ask permission to exist. Do not ask permission to be proud.

Mental health doesn’t always look obvious. Sometimes it looks like pulling away from friends, ignoring texts, losing patience faster, or feeling exhausted all the time.

On social media, a lack of focus or attention is often turned into a “relatable” quirk. But if there’s a shift in your ability to concentrate, connect, or enjoy things you normally care about, it might be your mind and body asking for rest. The key word being “shift”, a change from your baseline or your everyday behaviors and habits.

When you notice these shifts, small adjustments can be beneficial to your mental health. Just sitting in on conversations and actively listening can help with loneliness. Taking breaks when scrolling or playing games can help reset your brain and body. Eating with pets can be a reminder to nurture your body.

This Mental Health Awareness Month, pay attention to the shift. Check in with yourself. Take the break. Reach out when you need support 💚

Her work continues to shape Asian American activism and continues to inspire people to stand up, speak out, and build solidarity across communities.
