Mending Spirits Animal Rescue Mending Spirits Animal Rescue is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) foster-based all-animal rescue in Mankato, MN. Our team is composed of committed unpaid volunteers.

We serve vast communities in need throughout Minnesota and all over the United States. Mending Spirits Animal Rescue is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) 100 percent volunteer foster-based animal rescue in Mankato, MN. Founded in October of 2013, MSARs dedicated volunteers of over 200 members have successfully enabled rescue for nearly 4000 animals of roughly 30 different species! We maintain an average of 180 or more animals in foster care, ranging from dogs, cats, reptiles, birds, rabbits, pocket pets, exotics, and farm animals. We are one of the only all-animal rescues in southern Minnesota! MSARs animals are provided:
• Spay or neuter surgery
• Distemper and Rabies vaccinations and boosters
• Deworming treatments
• Heartworm tests and treatment/medication (if positive)
• Microchip implant
• FIV and FeLV tests and treatment/medication (if positive)
• Monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives
• Dental care if needed
• Orthopedic surgery and aftercare if needed
• Care for illness and injury
• Food, treats, and supplements appropriate for their nutritional needs
• Access to free training
• Supplies for our fosters (food, crate, bedding, toys, leash, collar, cat litter, etc.) Our Mission:
We successfully rescue animals from animal impound, high kill facilities, owner surrenders, cruelty cases, strays, and puppy mills then place them into well-paired, permanent homes. We serve as a rescue for the community too and educate and advocate for responsible pet ownership, pet retention tools, overpopulation control, affordable spaying/neutering services, supplying pet food during hardship, behavioral management and training, and proper preventative and maintenance care. Our five programs activate our mission and beautifully orchestrate the compassion of our incredible volunteers. Pet Retention Program:
MSAR takes pride in enabling successful pet ownership that is lifelong. We engage in securing proper placements with a screening process. In addition, we have created a Pet Behavior Library, supplying access to professional training and behavioral staff at no cost to our alumni. Our overall return rate is less than 4 percent. Help Them Heal Program:
On average, nearly 50 percent of our intakes are special needs. Let's define “special needs”. The reality is that all animals need special care and love. Special needs animals often require a little extra time, love, and energy. These animals take a certain commitment, especially financially, as they will often need extensive medical care or other supportive services. Special needs animals may suffer from the following:
• Has a physical disability
• Has a chronic or terminal illness
• Is recovering from a serious injury
• Is elderly and/or requires hospice care at home
• Has emotional and/or behavioral problems

The above list is certainly not a comprehensive list of issues and diseases but gives you an idea of what one can expect. Many of our animals’ medical care costs exceed their adoption fees! They all deserve a chance! Securing wellness and a loving forever home for a special needs animal is so rewarding. Healing Heroes Program:
New in 2019, we have launched our Healing Heroes program! MSAR has a professional trainer onboard who custom trains rescued dogs to become a trained service dog for a Veteran in need. We have begun to work closely with Veteran supportive programs to assist with connecting us to Veterans appropriate for this cause. We do not charge higher adoption fees for these specially trained dogs and
the fee is solely funded by fundraising and donation. Pantry Program:
This program utilizes our extra donated supplies to help local families who might be facing uncertainty during this time when financial security, stability, and physical and mental health became the nation's biggest concern. Donations that met the needs of the pets, were facilitated in a safe and contactless manner. Mending Moments Program:
Established in the loving memory of Kelly Hanson
March 7th, 1973 - May 3rd, 2022. Kelly was MSAR’s Board Secretary, Marketing Director, and Specialized Foster Caregiver. Kelly lovingly welcomed countless dogs into her heart and home with immense devotion and compassion. Those special dogs simply needed someone to believe in them while surrounding them with nurturing wholesome care. In May of 2021, Kelly sadly was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Kelly fulfilled and exceeded in all of her roles within rescue while she bravely fought this battle. After Kelly suffered a severe stroke, she peacefully slipped away on May 3rd of 2022. MSAR’s Mending Moments Program promotes a beautiful vision that continues Kelly's heartfelt passion. It embodies Kelly’s ability to provide comfort care. Mending Moments addresses the physical, psychological, and social needs of animals with chronic and/or life-limiting diseases. In Kelly’s honor, this program also provides physical and emotional support for the animal’s foster caregiver. Our program strives to create a world in which animal hospice and palliative care services are available to animals and their devoted foster caregivers, lifelong within our community. When animals come into our care, sometimes they are not able to be adopted due to a terminal illness. In these cases, we heavily rely on foster caregivers to provide these animals with love, comfort, and quality care. This is essential during the last moments of their lives. It is important that these homeless animals are afforded the same love and dignity that all beloved pets deserve at the end of their lives. Through Mending Moments, MSAR is able to continue to honor Kelly’s passion. How is Smidget STILL waiting for a family of his own?

This sweet boy has been waiting for over four months, and he hasn’t received a single adoption application. Not one. 💔 And now, his birthday is just a couple of weeks away. Instead of celebrating with a family to call his own, he’s still waiting for someone to notice him and say, “You’re the one I’ve been looking for.”

Meet Smidget, a handsome black-and-white kitten with the most adorable pink nose, striking markings, and winged eyeliner that would make an emo teenager jealous. 🖤 He has the looks, the personality, and a heart overflowing with love. All he needs is someone willing to give him a chance.

Smidget is a people-loving sweetheart who wants to be part of absolutely everything you do. Watching TV? He’ll be right there, preferably inches from your face. Reading a book? He’d love to help! Walking through the house? He’ll circle your legs, chatting away as if he has a thousand stories to tell you.

And honestly, he probably does. ❤️

This outgoing little guy is affectionate, confident, curious, and full of kitten energy. Not much scares him—not even the vacuum cleaner! His biggest concern might just be discovering that his food bowl is empty. 😂

Smidget loves people so much that he sometimes forgets everyone needs a little personal space. He's still learning those boundaries, and having another kitten around to wrestle and chase has helped him burn off some of his endless energy. Because he can be enthusiastic with his affection, a home with older, cat-savvy children may be the best fit.

He gets along with dogs and cats, too, and would love a playful furry friend to help him make the most of every day.

Meet Bandit! The easygoing little charmer who’s always ready for fun and happy to lend an ear!

Bandit is a playful boy who loves to pounce, tackle, and engage in a little friendly rough-and-tumble. He’s always up for a wrestling match with his kitten friends and seems to believe that everyone is a potential playmate. He gets along wonderfully with the other kitties, but Coco holds a special place in his heart. Those two are often ready to get into a little mischief together!
Despite his playful side, Bandit has a wonderfully laid-back personality. One of the cutest things about him is how intently he studies your face when you talk to him. He’ll c**k his little head and look at you as if he’s carefully considering every word you say. Honestly, with listening skills like that, he may have a future as a therapist or trusted confidant! You can tell him all your troubles, and he’ll give you his full attention, even if his advice might just be a well-timed pounce.
Bandit also loves trying to engage his mama in play. He’ll nibble on her and invite her to join in the fun, but Mama sometimes has other plans. When she decides he needs a good bath, he’ll initially act as though this is a terrible inconvenience and that he has far more important things to do. But give him a little time, and he settles right in to enjoy the full spa treatment. Apparently, he knows self-care is important, even if he has to pretend otherwise!
Bandit is the perfect blend of playful, gentle, and easygoing. He loves having feline friends to romp around with, but he also has a sweet, attentive side that makes him especially endearing. Whether he’s tumbling around with Coco, attempting to recruit Mama for playtime, or sitting quietly studying your face, Bandit has a way of making every moment entertaining.

Meet Bingo! The little chatterbox with a big personality and an even bigger heart!

Bingo is the talker of the group, and she has absolutely no problem making her opinions known! Especially when food is involved. Did someone say dinner? She’s there! And if that food isn’t arriving fast enough, you can expect some serious front-paw flailing and a very vocal reminder that she’s ready to eat. Patience is still a work in progress, and waiting her turn for meals is definitely not her favorite activity!
Bingo started life as an orphan, found at only about a week old, and this little girl has shown incredible resilience from the very beginning. She worked hard in those early days, but her determination and strong spirit helped carry her through. Today, she’s thriving with siblings to love, wrestle, and roughhouse with. After starting life on her own, she now has a whole crew to keep her company!
When it comes to food, Bingo is always ready to lead the way. She was one of the first to try wet food and gruel, and she jumped right in with enthusiasm. And by jumped in, we mean she literally stands in the saucer to make sure she gets every last drop! She’s also one of the first two kittens to start using the litter box, proving that she’s not just full of personality but a clever little girl, too.
For all her energy and enthusiasm, Bingo knows the importance of a little downtime. Once she’s had a nice, full tummy, she retreats to the cat bed for some well-earned rest. She would very much appreciate a “Do Not Disturb” sign on the door, thank you very much! After all, being this adorable and entertaining is exhausting work.
Bingo is curious, determined, adventurous, and often the first to try something new. Watching her grow from such a tiny, vulnerable kitten into a confident little leader has been incredibly rewarding. She has a whole lot of personality packed into one little body, and she keeps us smiling every step of the way.
Bingo would make a wonderful addition to a home ready for a kitten with plenty to say, lots of love to give, and a personality that will keep life interesting. Meet Coco! The tiniest snuggle bug with a big personality!

If you’re looking for a little kitten who believes there’s no such thing as too many snuggles, Coco might just be your girl! She is definitely the snuggliest and most laid-back of the bunch, and she has made it pretty clear that human affection is high on her list of priorities. In fact, she prefers to seek out her people for some love and cuddles before she settles in for her meal. Priorities, people!
Once she’s had her fill of warm milk and has a happy, full tummy, Coco is ready to show off her adventurous side! She enjoys climbing, exploring, and seeing what kind of mischief she can get into. She may be the smallest of the group, but don’t let that fool you. This tiny girl has absolutely no problem tackling and pinning her much bigger brothers! Apparently, she missed the memo that she’s supposed to be the little one.
Coco also knows how to appreciate the finer things in life. She loves rolling onto her back for a good grooming session, stretching out for a luxurious bath, or sprawling into the most adorable positions for a nice, long nap. She has perfected the art of being completely relaxed and utterly irresistible.
But her favorite place of all? Wherever her people are! Coco would be happiest curled up on your chest, nestled against your shoulder, or tucked into a cozy pocket while you go about your day. She’s the kind of kitten who wants to be part of whatever you’re doing, preferably while getting plenty of affection along the way.

Meet Stripe! The little foodie with the sweetest mew!
Stripe came into this world with at least one thing figured out: the litter box! This clever little guy took to it right away, like he was born knowing exactly what to do. Talk about making things easy!

When it comes to food, Stripe is definitely one of the foodies of the group, right alongside Bingo! But while some kitties might gobble their meals down, Stripe takes his dining experience seriously. He closes his eyes and savors each little bite like he’s enjoying a five-star meal. Honestly, we can all learn a thing or two from this boy about slowing down and appreciating the good things in life!

Stripe also has a curious, observant side. He likes to study his people, quietly taking everything in as he gets to know the humans around him. And when he does decide to speak up, he has the cutest little mew that is sure to steal your heart. It's almost as if he has something very important to tell you, and you just have to listen!

Now, if there’s one thing Stripe does exceptionally well besides eating, it’s napping. He’s definitely the cat napper of the group and can often be found snoozing away, enjoying a little beauty rest. But don't let that sleepy face fool you! The moment he catches a whiff of food, he can go from fast asleep to wide awake in approximately 0.2 seconds. Apparently, no nap is too deep when snacks are involved!

Stripe is the perfect combination of sweet, observant, laid-back, and food-motivated. He has his own little quirks that make him special, and we can’t wait to watch his personality continue to shine as he grows.

💙 Meet Bluey! A loving mama with a playful side!

Bluey is such a wonderful mama to her 4 baby kittens with one of them being a little orphan she welcomed into her pride! She has been loving, attentive, and devoted to her kittens, making sure they get all the care and affection they need. Of course, being a mama doesn’t mean she’s above helping herself to her kittens’ leftover food if there happens to be extra! A girl has to keep her strength up, after all!
One of the sweetest things about Bluey has been watching her personality blossom. As she’s grown more comfortable, we’ve gotten to see more and more of her playful, curious side, and it has been so much fun! She loves wand toys, fuzzy toys, and pretty much anything that moves. Give her something fun to chase, and she’s ready to play!
Now that she’s getting some well-deserved time outside the nursery, Bluey is enjoying the opportunity to stretch her legs, explore, and run around with the other kitties. When the play sessions get going upstairs, you’d think a herd of elephants was playing tag! It’s wonderful to see her embracing this new chapter and enjoying all the fun that comes with being a cat herself, rather than just being a mama.
But don’t let her playful side fool you; Bluey also has a softer side that will absolutely melt your heart. She loves a warm lap, gentle affection, and those just-right chin scritches. There’s something so special about watching a cat who has spent her time caring for others begin to relax, feel safe, and enjoy a little pampering of her own.
Bluey is a beautiful reminder that even the best mamas deserve their own happily-ever-after. She has so much love to give and so much personality to share, and we can’t wait to see her continue to thrive.

This brownish gold fluffy male dog was found on the 200 block of James Ave near Jefferson Elementary. He has a chain collar with no tags or microchip. The dog is currently at the City of Mankato Impound located at 903 Mound Avenue (inside Sibley Park).

Meet Thelma!
Thelma is a sweet guinea pig who was found outside on her own by a Good Samaritan. Because of her uncertain start, she can be a little cautious with people and needs some time to learn that she’s safe.

With a consistent routine, regular socializing, and plenty of yummy treats, Thelma has already started coming out of her shell! She’s discovered the joy of wheeking when she hears food and treat bags and is becoming more comfortable showing off her guinea pig personality.

Thelma is looking for a patient family who will help continue building her confidence with a predictable routine, unlimited hay, fresh greens, treats, and gentle interaction. Give this little lady some time to trust you, and we think there’s a very sweet girl waiting to blossom.
