Mending Spirits Animal Rescue

Mending Spirits Animal Rescue Mending Spirits Animal Rescue is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) foster-based all-animal rescue in Mankato, MN. Our team is composed of committed unpaid volunteers.

We serve vast communities in need throughout Minnesota and all over the United States. Mending Spirits Animal Rescue is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) 100 percent volunteer foster-based animal rescue in Mankato, MN. Founded in October of 2013, MSARs dedicated volunteers of over 200 members have successfully enabled rescue for nearly 4000 animals of roughly 30 different species! We maintain an average of 18

0 or more animals in foster care, ranging from dogs, cats, reptiles, birds, rabbits, pocket pets, exotics, and farm animals. We are one of the only all-animal rescues in southern Minnesota! MSARs animals are provided:
• Spay or neuter surgery
• Distemper and Rabies vaccinations and boosters
• Deworming treatments
• Heartworm tests and treatment/medication (if positive)
• Microchip implant
• FIV and FeLV tests and treatment/medication (if positive)
• Monthly heartworm and flea/tick preventatives
• Dental care if needed
• Orthopedic surgery and aftercare if needed
• Care for illness and injury
• Food, treats, and supplements appropriate for their nutritional needs
• Access to free training
• Supplies for our fosters (food, crate, bedding, toys, leash, collar, cat litter, etc.) Our Mission:
We successfully rescue animals from animal impound, high kill facilities, owner surrenders, cruelty cases, strays, and puppy mills then place them into well-paired, permanent homes. We serve as a rescue for the community too and educate and advocate for responsible pet ownership, pet retention tools, overpopulation control, affordable spaying/neutering services, supplying pet food during hardship, behavioral management and training, and proper preventative and maintenance care. Our five programs activate our mission and beautifully orchestrate the compassion of our incredible volunteers. Pet Retention Program:
MSAR takes pride in enabling successful pet ownership that is lifelong. We engage in securing proper placements with a screening process. In addition, we have created a Pet Behavior Library, supplying access to professional training and behavioral staff at no cost to our alumni. Our overall return rate is less than 4 percent. Help Them Heal Program:
On average, nearly 50 percent of our intakes are special needs. Let's define “special needs”. The reality is that all animals need special care and love. Special needs animals often require a little extra time, love, and energy. These animals take a certain commitment, especially financially, as they will often need extensive medical care or other supportive services. Special needs animals may suffer from the following:
• Has a physical disability
• Has a chronic or terminal illness
• Is recovering from a serious injury
• Is elderly and/or requires hospice care at home
• Has emotional and/or behavioral problems

The above list is certainly not a comprehensive list of issues and diseases but gives you an idea of what one can expect. Many of our animals’ medical care costs exceed their adoption fees! They all deserve a chance! Securing wellness and a loving forever home for a special needs animal is so rewarding. Healing Heroes Program:
New in 2019, we have launched our Healing Heroes program! MSAR has a professional trainer onboard who custom trains rescued dogs to become a trained service dog for a Veteran in need. We have begun to work closely with Veteran supportive programs to assist with connecting us to Veterans appropriate for this cause. We do not charge higher adoption fees for these specially trained dogs and
the fee is solely funded by fundraising and donation. Pantry Program:
This program utilizes our extra donated supplies to help local families who might be facing uncertainty during this time when financial security, stability, and physical and mental health became the nation's biggest concern. Donations that met the needs of the pets, were facilitated in a safe and contactless manner. Mending Moments Program:
Established in the loving memory of Kelly Hanson
March 7th, 1973 - May 3rd, 2022. Kelly was MSAR’s Board Secretary, Marketing Director, and Specialized Foster Caregiver. Kelly lovingly welcomed countless dogs into her heart and home with immense devotion and compassion. Those special dogs simply needed someone to believe in them while surrounding them with nurturing wholesome care. In May of 2021, Kelly sadly was diagnosed with Ovarian Cancer. Kelly fulfilled and exceeded in all of her roles within rescue while she bravely fought this battle. After Kelly suffered a severe stroke, she peacefully slipped away on May 3rd of 2022. MSAR’s Mending Moments Program promotes a beautiful vision that continues Kelly's heartfelt passion. It embodies Kelly’s ability to provide comfort care. Mending Moments addresses the physical, psychological, and social needs of animals with chronic and/or life-limiting diseases. In Kelly’s honor, this program also provides physical and emotional support for the animal’s foster caregiver. Our program strives to create a world in which animal hospice and palliative care services are available to animals and their devoted foster caregivers, lifelong within our community. When animals come into our care, sometimes they are not able to be adopted due to a terminal illness. In these cases, we heavily rely on foster caregivers to provide these animals with love, comfort, and quality care. This is essential during the last moments of their lives. It is important that these homeless animals are afforded the same love and dignity that all beloved pets deserve at the end of their lives. Through Mending Moments, MSAR is able to continue to honor Kelly’s passion. Please help us continue our mission of being the “bridge between; for an animal in need” as we work to ensure an animal will “never be alone and forever in a home”. We appreciate your taking the time to consider supporting Mending Spirits Animal Rescue. Thank You,

Kristy Olson

💔 Reba is feeling a little sad and left out…

This sweet girl has been waiting almost two whole months for someone to finally say, “You’re the one. Come home.” 🥺🐾

Reba is just 4 months old, but she is already showing everyone just how incredibly smart, loving, and special she is. She’s the kind of puppy who catches on quickly, loves being around her people, and has so much potential to grow into an amazing lifelong companion. ❤️

While other puppies are finding their forever families, Reba is still waiting. And we just can’t understand why. She has so much love to give and so much life ahead of her.

She shouldn’t have to keep wondering when her turn will come. She deserves a family who will see her bright little eyes, her clever personality, her playful puppy spirit—and realize they’ve found something truly special. 🐶💕

Reba’s forever family is out there. We just need to help them find each other.

Please share Reba’s story. Maybe the person who has been looking for their puppy will see her today. Maybe her happily-ever-after is just one share away. 🏡❤️

Reba is waiting. Please don’t let her wait alone. 🐾

From the Foster Family:

Meet Reba, a sweet and adventurous puppy with a heart full of curiosity and affection! This little shadow loves being close to her people and will happily follow you from room to room. Her favorite place to be is outside, where she can stretch out in the grass, soak up the sunshine, and chase butterflies around the yard.

Reba is a smart girl who is already learning commands such as “no,” “sit,” “inside,” and “lay down.” . She’s also a great listener and is eager to learn. Like many young puppies, she is still working on keeping all four paws on the ground, walking politely on a leash, and not nipping when she gets overly excited.

When she’s not exploring the backyard, Reba enjoys chewing on bones, playing tug-of-war, munching on treats, and carrying around stuffed animals—especially if they happen to belong to the kids! She absolutely adores her foster dog sibling and spends much of her time running alongside her, roughhousing, and following her wherever she goes.

Reba is currently living in a home with children, a resident dog, and she has access to a large fenced backyard where she loves to wander and play. Because she is still learning boundaries and can get excited, she would likely do best with a family with older children who can help reinforce her training and continue building her confidence.

If you’re looking for a loyal, playful, and outdoorsy companion who will be your constant sidekick, Reba may be the perfect addition to your family!

About Me:

Hi! My name is Reba. I’m a fun, energetic girl who loves being with my people. Since I was found as a stray, I spent much of my early life outdoors, so it’s still my favorite place to be. You’ll usually find me soaking up the sunshine, running around the yard with my foster sister, chasing butterflies, or happily chewing on a bone.

One of my favorite things to do is sit at my foster parents’ feet and look up at them. They give the best pets, tell me what a “good girl” I am, and make me feel so loved.

I’m a smart pup and have learned that when I hear “sit” or “kennel up,” I usually earn a tasty treat. I’m learning new things every day and can’t wait to keep showing everyone what a good girl I can be.

I’m so excited to find my forever family—one that will love me as much as I’ll love them. I can’t wait to meet you!

From the Foster Family: Misty is a gentle, soulful young girl looking for a quiet home where she can truly shine. While she might take a moment to hide when you first meet her, don't let her shyness fool you—underneath her quiet exterior is a deeply sweet, affectionate soul waiting for the right person to earn her trust. Misty is low-maintenance, polite, and very peaceful. She takes a little extra time to adjust to new environments, but watching her blossom into a brave, loving companion is the most rewarding experience. She is never aggressive—when she feels overwhelmed, she simply retreats to a safe, cozy spot to observe until she feels ready. A quiet, low-traffic home (or apartment) without loud noises or unpredictable commotion. Patient adopters who understand that trust takes time and are excited to celebrate her small daily victories. She would do wonderfully as a solo kitty receiving all your calm love, or in a home with another very calm, non-dominant cat who can show her the ropes. Her current foster home has grade-school age kids and multiple cats and Misty does well here too.

About Me: I might look a little quiet at first, and I might hide behind the curtain when we first meet. The big world can feel a bit overwhelming to a gentle girl like me! But if you give me a little time and a lot of patience, I promise to show you just how sweet I truly am. I’m not a wild zoomie-cat or a loud talker. Instead, I’m a quiet observer who prefers soft blankets, sunny windows, and gentle moments. Once I know I’m safe with you, my brave side comes out—I’ll walk over, give you a tiny head-butt, and turn on my soft, happy purr while you scratch behind my ears. I love having a plush bed or a quiet corner where I can recharge my courage. I’d love to be your one-and-only princess, or live with another super calm, friendly cat who can show me the ropes.

From the Foster Family: If you’ve been looking for a sweet, low-drama companion who loves people as much as playtime, look no further! Rickie has been thriving in foster care, and while black cats sometimes get overlooked, this little one is pure sunshine wrapped in a glossy coat. She has reached that ideal age where the intense "baby kitten chaos" has settled down, but the playful, affectionate personality is out in full force. Rickie is extremely adaptable and would thrive in a variety of homes—from a cozy apartment to a busy family house. Anyone ready to offer chin scratches, a few toy mice, and plenty of love will gain a loyal companion for life. Thanks to her sweet and gentle nature, Rickie does great with kids. She enjoys interactive play with gentle hands and loves receiving affection from family members of all ages.

About Me: Hi! I’m Rickie! Don't let the sleek panther looks fool you—I'm a total softie! At just one year old, I've officially grown out of the tiny kitten phase, but I still have plenty of fun, playful energy. My favorite thing in the world is being around people. Whether you're working, watching TV, or getting ready for bed, I'll be right there keeping you company. I would do great in almost any home that has plenty of love, chin scratches, and cozy nap spots to share. I'm friendly enough for a busy household, but sweet and low-maintenance enough for a quiet apartment.

Meet Armani and Coco Chanel (Coco). These two kitties have been together most of their lives and would like to go to their new forever home as a pair. They had one owner for loved and cared for them, indoors, but suddenly found themselves abandoned outdoors when she was taken ill. Without front claws, these two survivor spirits managed to make it on their own for many months and eventually found shelter under the porch of a wonderful woman who lovingly cared for them until Mending Spirits Animal Rescue (MSAR) could place them in a safe foster home.

Armani is a vocal character and can sound a but crunchy like an old man at times but is actually very laid back and loves being around people. He is the bolder of the two and is the first to investigate new spaces and people. He is happy to spend time laying around, getting in some good naps, and being a "buddy". Sometimes Armani's foster mom thinks he seems like a dog in a cats body! He is very affectionate and has a playful side too!

Coco is mild mannered and likes to take in new spaces slowly. She warms to people quickly and likes a good belly rub once she feels comfortable. She is a sweet kitty who doesn't ask for much but a safe, caring home with a quiet space to sneak off to when needed. Although Coco has been pretty conservative about exploring, she surprised her foster mom when she showed an eagerness to meet the 3 large resident dogs in the household.

About Me: Hey, I’m Crosby! My story started along a gravel road where I was found roaming with my siblings. I was ready for a new adventure and found myself right at home. I was stoked to have a bunch of toys to play with! It was really nice to snuggle into some blankies and relax after a long play session. I love having a big bowl of food and laying down while I drink fresh water. I have these really big paws and someday I think I’ll grow into them! There is a bigger kitty here and a couple of dogs. I’m very curious about them and I’d love to be friends. I’m super easy going and get along with anyone that I meet. I’m very excited to find my forever home and would love to meet you!
From the foster: Crosby, AKA Thumbs is such a delight! We love him and all of his toes. He has been a very sociable and clean boy. Crosby is very curious and playful. He is well versed in litter-box training. He seems to be growing by the minute and isn’t phased by much. Sometimes when he is sleepy, he will get busy making biscuits and purr until he falls asleep. He’s extremely handsome and lovable. He would be a fantastic addition to just about any family!

About Me:
Hi there, I’m Temperance! I was strolling along a gravel road with my siblings when I was scooped up and brought to a new place. I was pretty spooked by this change and I’m not quite sure who I can trust quite yet. I can say, it’s really relaxing to have warm blankets and I really enjoy having a minnow treat here and there. I LOVE treats! I love playing with my siblings and sometimes I enjoy a quick pet from my foster mom. I tell her all about my day and thank her for all the treats she shares with me. I’m looking for a quiet place and a gentle human to help me break out of my shell. If you are patient with me, I know we will be best friends for life.

From the foster: Temperance is such a sweetheart! She is a very tender girl with a huge heart. She is fantastic with the litter-box and regularly grooms herself. She is looking for her safe and trustworthy person to show her that it’s okay to get close. She is always watching her siblings receive affection and lingers close by. Sometimes she “forgets” her own fear and is so happy to receive a couple pets. She will quickly realize and retreat. Her big moon eyes glow with the desire and need to be loved from her safe little comfy nook. Sometimes she will greet me with a vibrating rattlesnake tail sticking straight up because she is so excited. She is soothed when she is talked to and will howl when she finds herself lonely. She will communicate clearly with a hiss and a swipe when her boundaries are tested. Overall, with some patience and tenderness, Temperance would be a fantastic companion in a calm home.

Meet Clementine!
Clementine is a beautiful little young parakeet who is just beginning to discover the world! She’s a very vocal girl who loves to sing and would absolutely love a feathered friend to keep her company. She’s still learning that people can be trusted, so right now we’re giving her time to settle in, build her confidence, and learn that hands can be a good thing. With patience, gentle guidance, and continued handling practice, we know this sweet girl will continue to blossom.
