Opponents of using hair tests to identify truck drivers with a drug habit claim that hair color, or a person’s ethnic race, can falsify the results of a hair drug test. But new research clearly shows that’s not true. A study of more than 151,000 matched urine and hair drug tests submitted by truck drivers, across 8 different racial groups, found no evidence that hair testing discriminates against anyone.

The research found that Asians, Hispanics, Blacks, Whites, and four other racial groups pass (and fail) hair drug tests at essentially the same percentages. Read the research on hair testing efficacy and fairness ➡️ https://bit.ly/4jB9xsY

Trucking Alliance carriers log billions of miles each year. To keep their drivers safe, the companies invest in safety technology, rigorous driver training, and strict compliance standards, and are pushing the industry to do the same.

However, unauthorized foreign-owned trucking companies (usually from Mexico and Eastern Europe) are bypassing regulations and transporting domestic freight without proper credentials, safety protocols, or equipment maintenance. The practice is called cabotage, and it’s illegal.

Congress must provide state and federal agencies with the resources to keep these trucks off our U.S. highways. When safety rules apply equally to everyone, families traveling the interstate are safer.

The federal government relies on a urine test to screen truck drivers for habitual drug use. But a urine test captures controlled substances only within a 48-72 hour window. Drug users simply refrain from using drugs or mask their use with over-the-counter products.

That’s why Trucking Alliance carriers increasingly rely on a hair drug test. And these companies have discovered that drivers who pass a urine test frequently fail a hair test; in fact, 9 out of 10 actual drug users who pass a urine test, fail the hair test. The carrier disqualifies them. But they simply go to another company, pass the required urine test and keep driving massive tractor trailer rigs alongside your friends and family. That’s bad for highway safety.

Long-haul truck driving is one of the hardest jobs in America. Drivers spend several days away from their families. They encounter unforeseen delays, bad weather, dangerous motorists, congested highways and more, all while still managing day-to-day life alone.

Commercial truck drivers desire the same mental and emotional health as everyone. On this World Mental Health Day, check in with a truck driver you might know. A healthy and supported driver is a safe driver.

Safe roads depend on more than good drivers. They also depend on accountability.

Insurance requirements help make sure trucking companies have the financial responsibility to operate safely and care for their equipment, drivers, and the public.

Updating standards that haven't changed in more than 40 years is one way to strengthen safety while helping ensure families are protected if the unexpected happens.

Everyone deserves confidence when they share the road.

Safety isn’t a slogan. It’s a strategy. And it’s working...

The Trucking Alliance wants to eliminate large truck crash fatalities. The first step is to make sure truck drivers are well-trained, well-rested, and drug-free. We made major safety investments and implemented major safety protocols like electronic logging devices that replaced paper logbooks for national databases that help employers identify truck drivers who fail drug tests.

Since 2023:
✔️ Large truck crash fatalities are down 24.5%
✔️ Injuries are down 8%
✔️ Crashes are down 14%*

This progress is worth recognizing, but this progress does not mean that our work is finished. It’s clear that strong safety policies can and will make a difference. We just need to keep building on what works.

You’re driving back home with your family when a tractor-trailer pulls up alongside you on the highway.

Trucks share our road every day, so you don’t think twice about it.

But what happens when truck drivers are involved in a fatal crash? And what does the testing tell us afterward?

Our analysis of 2022 federal crash data found that 28.3% of truck drivers who take a post-accident drug test after a fatal crash tested positive for an illicit drug.

But here’s another important number: 58% of drivers involved in those fatal crashes never took a drug test.

These numbers are concerning, and they deserve attention.

Drug testing plays an important role in highway safety. We need strong data that gives regulators, carriers and the general public a clear picture of drug use after serious crashes.

Safer roads require stronger oversight, effective safety measures and well-informed decision-making.
