Last weekend, SJCA staff attended the American Community Gardening Association conference, and we came home full of ideas.

Keynote speaker Dr. Brandon Cosby, CEO of Flanner House of Indianapolis, built Flanner Farms, a two-acre farm in the middle of a food desert that now feeds its neighborhood through a community-owned grocery. It's proof that a small garden can impact the local food system.

We talked with Andrew Kirkpatrick of Farm Philly. They build gardens in public parks, exactly what we're working toward in Burns Park, and they support their gardeners with a farm tool library. That's an idea we want to explore here.

We met Kendall Rae Johnson of aGROWKulture Farm, the youngest certified farmer in the U.S. and a USDA Youth Ambassador. If a six-year-old can start a farm, the rest of us have no excuse.

Closer to home, Chris Wyman of Potluck Food Rescue redirects over a million pounds of surplus food a year to hungry Arkansans. Dr. Minnie Hatchett's Crump Garden shows what a garden can do for elderly neighbors. We also loved hearing from Sylvia Blain of the Arkansas Hunger Relief Alliance and the Campus Cultivators, students at Philander Smith University reviving gardens for their community.

We CAN change our food systems if we invest in our communities and support each other.
