A new trend is encouraging teens to use the UV Index to achieve the “perfect” tan. But the reality is a tan isn’t a sign of health, it’s a sign of skin damage.⁠
⁠
The higher the UV Index, the stronger the sun’s rays and the more protection your skin needs. Using it as a tanning tool is exactly the opposite of what it was designed for.⁠

In this article, one teen, , is speaking up and trying to reach her peers with a message that’s worth hearing: that tan you’re chasing is actually your skin’s response to UV damage.⁠

Iowa continues to face some of the nation's highest cancer rates, including rising rates of melanoma. A recent video from KCCI - Des Moines explores factors that may contribute to Iowa's high melanoma rates and highlights the importance of prevention, early detection, and sun safety. https://ow.ly/WSh050ZNtzQ

The 2026 Cancer in Iowa report estimates 1,500 Iowans will be diagnosed with melanoma this year. Iowa has the fourth-highest rate in the U.S., according to the CDC.
