Announcement from Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission:

OHRC Identifies Significant Veterinary Findings in Horses Covered by Emergency Protective Orders

OKLAHOMA CITY, Okla. — 6/3/2026— The Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission (“OHRC”) announced today that its ongoing veterinary review of horses covered by recent Emergency Protective Orders has identified a significant number of horses showing findings consistent with thyrotoxicosis, an extremely rare and serious condition involving excess circulating thyroid hormone.

To date, 68 of 96 horses evaluated across multiple trainers have shown findings consistent with this condition.

Thyrotoxicosis is exceptionally uncommon in horses and may cause elevated heart rate and respiration, hyperthermia, fatigue, weakness, muscle tremors, stiffness, and, in severe cases, collapse. Those findings are consistent with the kind of abnormal post-race distress that led OHRC’s Board of Stewards and veterinarians to take immediate protective action earlier this meet.

“The protection of the horse comes first,” said Amanda English, Executive Director of the Oklahoma Horse Racing Commission. “Our Stewards and veterinarians saw something that was not normal, trusted their experience, and acted when it mattered. That decision protected horses and allowed this Commission to uncover a serious medical problem that demanded attention.”

The three Emergency Protective Orders were issued after repeated incidents in which horses displayed severe post-race distress, including cases where horses could not safely leave the track under their own power. Those orders required the affected horses to be withheld from competition pending examination, testing, records review, and individualized veterinary clearance.

The Commission’s review remains ongoing. Each horse must proceed through a structured safety protocol that includes medical records review, diagnostic workups, veterinary assessment, and observed exercise before any return to competition may be considered. No horse will race unless and until OHRC veterinarians and the Board of Stewards are satisfied that the horse may safely compete without compromising equine welfare or the integrity of racing.

OHRC publicly recognized the courage and professionalism of its Stewards and veterinary team. “Faced with unusual and alarming conditions, they chose immediate protective action rather than delay. That decision is now producing critical answers,” said Director English.

Iowa Bred! Congratulations!

Chew Bac Cah broke from the gate at warp speed Saturday night and went gate to wire as the 21-1 longshot winner in the Grade 2, $373,800 Heritage Place Oaks.

Chew Bac Cah, a 3-year-old Iowa-bred daughter of Apollitical Jess, out of the PYC Paint Your Wagon mare Paint Or More, won in stakes company for the second time in her career and proved how much she likes Re*****on Park and the distance of 400 yards. Her other stakes win came at Prairie Meadows in Altoona, Iowa, in the $95,000 Hawkeye Futurity (R) as a 2-year-old on July 5, 2025. At Re*****on Park, she has made it to the gate six times and won four of them. At the distance of 400 yards, she has won three-of-four. She opened some eyes when she won her Oaks trial race by open daylight, drawing off to a 1-1/2 length victory on May 10 here.

It wasn’t long into the race that trainer Jason Olmstead knew she was a winner.

“Third jump out of the gate,” he said. “This was a tough field of horses, so she just kind of fit in. I really thought if she ran a great race, she’d light the board or something. She got a break like that, you’re not going to run her down. I felt very good after the trials (won by 1-1/2 lengths); she’s a nice filly. She’s a full sister to Dickey Bob. Everybody knows who Dickey Bob is. We’ve had a lot of fun with that mare’s offspring, so we are just glad to continue the family tradition.”

Minnesota-bred Dickey Bob won 32-of-70 races lifetime with a bankroll of $529,119 before retiring last year. His full sister, Chew Bac Cah, earned $156,996 from the purse for her trip to the winner’s circle and that pushed her lifetime marks to 11 starts, seven wins, and one third, more than doubling her lifetime bankroll to $296,586. She was bred and is owned by Lunderborg LLC (Bruce Lunderborg) of Gibbon, Minn., who also owned and bred Dickey Bob.

It’s hard to believe Chew Bac Cah had won 6-of-10 races coming into Saturday night and was totally ignored on the toteboard at 21-1, paying $44 to win, $15 to place and $12 to show. Wera C, the fastest qualifier from the trials, finished second at 5-1 odds, a half-length behind the winner. Flying Policy 123 (13-1) was third, another neck back. The rest of the order of finish was Emerald Bay (5-1) fourth, Toby Sis (3-5 favorite) fifth, Sunshining (20-1) sixth, Jess Want to Know (50-1) seventh, Where is Queen B (14-1) eighth, Mamma Im Leaving You (11-1) ninth, and Honey Creek (50-1) 10th.

Chew Bac Cah covered the distance in a winning time of :19.661, recording a speed index of 93. Jockey Ramiro Garcia was not that surprised that she went off at such high odds.

“It’s Re*****on Park where the best of the best compete against each other and anything can happen top to bottom on the toteboard,” said Garcia. “We thought she could compete and thank God she showed it. We got a little lucky, but honestly, she really does break very fast. She is quick from the gate and has quick reactions. When she gets out like that, it’s hard to catch her.”

This was the first victory in the Heritage Place Oaks for all of the connections of Chew Bac Cah.
