A new Pentagon promotion test is putting would-be generals into simulated combat scenarios before boards decide who gets a star.

The Joint Warfighting Evaluation will give eligible senior officers military problems to solve, with some versions featuring an AI-powered adversary that responds to their decisions in real time.

"Right now in our current system, we have people that are very good at navigating their careers," Pentagon adviser Stu Scheller tells Fox News Digital, while stressing existing performance reports will remain the "bedrock" of promotion decisions.

The first evaluations are expected in 2027, and each service is taking a different approach.

The Unit That Officially Never Existed

THE MISSION

Created in 1964 under the innocuous cover name "Studies and Observations Group," MACV-SOG was one of the most secretive American units to ever fight in Vietnam. Its operators — a mix of Army Green Berets, Navy SEALs, Air Force Air Commandos, CIA officers, and Marine Force Recon — ran covert reconnaissance and direct-action missions deep into Laos, Cambodia, and North Vietnam, territory the U.S. government publicly insisted it had no troops in at all.

THE DISGUISE

To protect that lie, every operator went "sterile" before crossing into denied territory. No dog tags. No ID. No rank insignia, no unit patches, nothing that could be traced back to the United States. Many carried foreign or captured enemy weapons instead of standard-issue American gear, and even their watches were cheap, untraceable Japanese models bought specifically because they couldn't be linked to the U.S. military.

THE COST

MACV-SOG teams were routinely outnumbered, sometimes by ratios as high as 30 to 1, operating with no guarantee of air support or extraction if things went wrong. Casualty rates in some recon teams exceeded 100 percent over the course of the war. If a man was killed or went missing deep behind enemy lines, the government's official policy of denial meant his own family often wasn't told the real circumstances of his death.

THE SILENCE

Operators were sworn to secrecy for decades. Entire missions, entire operations, simply didn't exist on paper. It wasn't until the 1990s, more than twenty years after the war ended, that the full scope of MACV-SOG's operations was finally declassified and its veterans could speak openly about what they had done.

The detail in this frame holds an extraordinary amount of history. Payne served on the JSOC personal security detachment for General Miller in Afghanistan. By that point he had already done the thing that would later earn him the nation's highest award.

On October 22, 2015, in Iraq, he led a combined assault team on a nighttime hostage rescue near Hawija, repeatedly entering a burning building under enemy fire to cut the locks and free hostages trapped inside, helping liberate roughly 75 people held by ISIS. He received the Medal of Honor in 2020, the first living operator from the Unit to wear it since the community's founding.

And the man he's protecting is no ordinary military leader. Miller is himself a veteran of the same Unit, a former squadron commander, JSOC commander, and Mogadishu veteran, one of the first Americans on the ground hunting Osama bin Laden after 9/11, and later the longest-serving commander of the entire war in Afghanistan.

Two men who came up through the same world. One guarding the other.
