Bad leadership isn’t a Marine Corps problem. It’s everywhere, and the only thing that changes is whether you let it decide your next move. That’s a lesson that follows you long after the uniform comes off.

Tobies has taken more Lance Corporals than any deployment since 2015. Staff Sergeant does not want a call from Tobies. Tobies does not want Jones.

Travis Jewell Travis Jewell, a USMC veteran, explains how a weekend safety brief goes when Staff Sergeant is freaking damn tired, the Lance Corporals are already on terminal leave in their heads, and Jones is one “aye, Staff Sergeant” away from calling from the strip club parking lot at 0200 and then from Onslow County Jail. Nothing at Tobies has ever helped a Lance Corporal make it to Monday.

Every Marine has sat through this brief, and every Marine has been Jones at least once. That’s the joke, and it’s also the point Ronnie makes right after: the people you stood in that formation with are the ones you stop calling first. You have no idea what they’re going through. Call, text, hit them up for a b**r. Tobies doesn’t count. That part of the brief holds up long after the uniform comes off.

You’re just another number. Until you’re not.

Travis Jewell Travis Jewell, a USMC veteran, explains how trying to get his VA claim filed meant chasing medical records nobody could find, getting put off by people who were supposed to help, and wanting to quit the process before it started.

Half the reason veterans don’t file is the process, and the other half is how it makes you feel while you’re in it. Nobody wants to ask for help from someone who treats them like a case number, so a lot of guys just stop asking. The fix is the same one it’s always been: somebody who actually picks up the phone. A rating is paperwork. Being treated like a person is what gets you through it, and that doesn’t stop mattering long after the uniform comes off.

Travis Jewell Travis Jewell, a USMC veteran, explains how a 🍎🍎🍎 5’5” recruit with a resting bitch face became the drill instructors’ favorite target at Parris Island, and why being respectful didn’t save him.

Every platoon had that guy. The one the drill instructors picked before he ever opened his mouth. Most of us either were him or stood next to him, and the ones who got singled out carried it a lot longer than boot camp.

That’s why these stories matter. Laughing about it years later with someone who went through the same thing is how it stops being a weight you carry alone, and it’s how a community stays a community long after the uniform comes off.

Travis Jewell Travis Jewell, a USMC veteran, explains how a drill instructor at Parris Island decided a 🍎🍎🍎 5’5” recruit was going to fit a mattress in his cargo pocket, and why the whole squad bay went silent watching him try.

None of it was supposed to make sense. That was the point. You learn early that the task doesn’t have to be possible, it just has to get done, and that lesson keeps showing up long after the uniform comes off.

So does the story. Every Marine has one like it, and telling them is how we find out we’re not the only ones. Sharing what we went through is what keeps the community together and keeps any of us from going through the rest alone.

The service put her around enough of the world that people finally got it right, and that kind of belonging stays with you long after the uniform comes off.

The instinct to share is not the problem. The problem is that the record exists whether you post it or not, and the people who go looking are patient. Protecting the people you love is a habit you keep long after the uniform comes off.

The ones who go looking are almost always the ones trying hardest to be useful, which is why nobody bothers running it on the guys who don’t care. That instinct to prove you belong doesn’t leave when the uniform does.
