"I am originally from Western Kentucky and now practice as a licensed massage therapist based in Atlanta. As I mature, so does my mother, and at times I need to travel back to Middle Tennessee and Western Kentucky for extended periods to help care for her.

Having the ability to work under a multistate license while caregiving for an elderly, ailing parent would be extremely helpful. Otherwise, I am sacrificing my livelihood and the life that I have built here in Atlanta. "

"I live in the southeast corner of Washington state, just one mile from the Oregon border. A multistate license would allow me to treat clients in Oregon who actually live closer to me than many of my Washington clients.

Right now, I’m unable to cross the border to provide care and instead have to refer them to an Oregon-licensed practitioner who may be farther away. It’s disappointing to turn people away when I could easily serve them."

"I came to Florida in 2011 to earn my massage therapy license, thinking I could return home to Olympia, WA, and begin working there. But when I got back, I was told I’d need to go back to school—even though Florida’s program exceeded Washington’s requirements.

By then, I had already invested $15,000, and I didn’t have another $5,000 or five more months to spare before I could start making a living. So I returned to Florida, and I’ve been here ever since.

One day, I would love to spend my summers in Washington and my winters in Florida. I miss my family, friends, and the nature I grew up with—and a multistate license would make that possible."

We've seen a lot of understandable confusion about Ohio's recently enacted legislation.

Many people assumed the Interstate Massage Compact (IMpact™) was simply updated, but that's not how interstate compacts work.

A compact isn't a program or an organization — it's shared legislation. Participating states must enact substantially the same law so they can operate under one commission, one rulebook, and eventually one multistate license.

When Ohio replaced its original IMpact legislation with different compact legislation, it didn't revise the existing compact. It established a different legislative framework.

This post explains why that distinction matters and why the IMpact remains committed to one compact, one commission, and one path forward.

Ohio's new law does not create a multistate massage therapy license.

Ohio's Senate Bill 276 replaced the state's original IMpact legislation with a different framework. As a result, massage therapists do not gain new interstate practice privileges, and the profession is now further from a unified interstate compact.

Ohio massage therapists have made it clear they want interstate mobility. The IMpact remains committed to achieving that goal through one compact, one commission, and one path forward.

"I live right on the border of Washington and Idaho. Although I’m currently a resident of Idaho, I completed all of my massage training and licensing in Washington.

I would love to work in both states as needed without the extra cost of maintaining multiple licenses. A multistate license would also give me the freedom to travel and work in other states."

"My practice is located in Ramsey, NJ, near the New York border. I’ve received several phone calls from family members of bedridden individuals in New York who need massage care. Unfortunately, I cannot help them because my license is only valid in New Jersey.

With a compact license, I could provide advanced, skilled massage to more people in need—especially those who rely on in-home visits. It would allow me to expand my services and bring alternative, effective manual therapy to those who need it most."
