With great sadness, we announce the closing of Ty’s Place: A Safe Space for Teens, which opened its doors in December 2019. Our last day of operation will be October31, 2026.

After nearly seven years of serving our youth and community, we have made the difficult decision to close Ty’s Place. Like many organizations committed to providing meaningful services to their communities, the ongoing lack of sustainable funding has made it increasingly difficult to maintain the space and continue operating at the level our young people deserve.

This was not an easy decision. Ty’s Place was created from a place of love, vision, and commitment to our youth, and closing its doors is a deeply emotional moment for all of us who have been part of its journey.

On behalf of the family of the late Assemblyman Tyrone Thompson and TULIPS, we extend our deepest and most heartfelt gratitude to every person who has supported Ty’s Place throughout the years.

To those who donated financially, volunteered their time, shared their talents, encouraged our young people, or simply walked through our doors to show their support — thank you. Your generosity and commitment helped create a space where our youth could feel safe, seen, heard, valued, and supported.

Ty’s Place was more than a physical space. It was a place where young people could come as they were, build relationships, discover their voices, and know that their community cared about them. Every volunteer, donor, mentor, partner, and supporter played a meaningful role in making that possible.

Our Mission Continues
Although the doors of Ty’s Place are closing, the mission of TULIPS continues to grow.

TULIPS remains committed to serving and empowering the young women in our community while continuing to welcome and support the young men who have also become an important part of our TULIPS Garden.

Just like a garden, our young leaders are growing, budding, and blooming, and we are honored to continue walking alongside each of them as they discover their purpose, develop their leadership, and reach their full potential.

While we search for a new location and explore opportunities to reopen a safe space for our youth, we need our community now more than ever.

As Auri begins her senior year and officially starts her PhD-level coursework, we are incredibly proud of all she has accomplished and excited for what lies ahead.

Wishing everyone a meaningful Juneteenth that renews our commitment to freedom and equality.

It was an honor to meet Opal Lee, the "Grandmother of Juneteenth." Thank you for your strength, courage, and persistence in helping make Juneteenth a national holiday. ❤️

She reminds us that when we stand together, we can overcome anything. The work isn't always easy, but it is always worth it.
