The Land Conservancy of North Kingstown is pleased to announce the permanent protection of 40.33 acres of pristine woodlands on the north side of Stony Lane. Christina Kirk Kramer and Nicole Kirk Webster, as executors for the estate of Heidi Kirk Duffy, have generously donated a conservation easement on four parcels. This protection is forever.
This area of mature upland forest abuts other protected lands, creating a much larger block of contiguous woodland habitat for wildlife and groundwater protection, and maintains a scenic vista. The most significant cultural resource is over a mile of old stone walls, a remnant of historic livestock use. In light of the ongoing intense residential development in this area, this is a significant and timely event. The north side abuts the massive Reynolds Farm complex of homes, condos, and apartments.
Conservation easements allow people to protect the land they love, while preserving the land for future generations by restricting certain rights or uses. It’s main function is to protect conservation values, such as agricultural and forestry lands, protection of water quality, and scenic vistas. Landowners retain many of their rights, including the right to own and use the land, sell it, and pass it on to their heirs, and use it for their recreation. A conserved property continues to provide economic benefits to both the landowner and the greater community. The land remains on the tax rolls in private ownership.
LCNK is a non-profit land trust that has been in existence since 1988. LCNK owns or holds conservation easements on 340 acres in town, mostly working farms. As a conservation organization LCNK is obligated to defend its conservation purposes through stewardship, for the benefit of the community.
Many thanks to the Kirk Duffy family.
