“The Masonic scheme is not discernible all at once, and unless our minds are properly prepared and our understandings carefully trained, they are unlikely ever to participate in the real secrets and mysteries of masonry at all, however often we may watch the performance of external ceremonial or however proficient we may be in memorizing the rituals and instruction lectures.”

~ W.L. Wilmhurst. “The Meaning of Masonry.”

Helping our Brothers across the line.

I had the pleasure of visiting Hancock Lodge No. 311 in Kansas last night to give an educational presentation. While there, I met Worshipful Brother Earl Genter, the Grand Lecturer of Kansas, who shared an important initiative they are leading.

The Grand Lodge of Kansas is hosting a blood drive, and they are looking for volunteers to help them reach their goal of 25 units. They currently have 7 donors signed up and could use our support to bridge the gap.

Event Details:
• When: Wednesday, May 27th | 10:00 AM – 2:00 PM
• Where: Pilgrim Community Church (Fellowship Hall)
• Address: 500 Arch St. Leavenworth, KS

How to Sign Up:
1. Visit savealifenow.org/group
2. Use Group Code: EW65
3. As a bonus, donors receive a packable picnic blanket.

Let’s show some Missouri hospitality and help our Kansas brothers hit their mark. If you are able to donate, please consider signing up at the link above.

The Performance Trap: Why Freemasonry is More Than a Memory Test.

The perspective that modern Freemasonry overemphasizes rote memorization at the expense of character-building is a central tenet of the Masonic Restoration and Traditional Observance movements. These groups argue that while ritual is a vital vehicle for the message, it is not the destination itself.

The graduation ceremony analogy is particularly apt. In most developmental frameworks, a ceremony marks a transition, but the substance of that transition occurs in the labor preceding it. Shifting the focus too heavily toward the ceremony creates a "performance culture" rather than a "transformative culture."

Sentiments echoing this concern often highlight several key areas of focus:

1. Instruction vs. Education: There is a critical distinction between "Masonic Instruction" (the rote learning of lines) and "Masonic Education" (the lifelong study of how to apply moral philosophy to one's life).

2. The Ritual as a Map: Many argue that the ritual should be treated as a mnemonic device or a "map" for internal psychological and moral work, rather than an end in itself.

3. The Internal Qualities: This school of thought emphasizes that the "Hidden Power" of the fraternity lies in the "Internal" work of self-improvement—the "Rough Ashlar" work—rather than external displays of memory.

4. Legacy through Character: The most respected figures in Masonry should be those whose lives exemplify the fraternity's values—the pillars of their communities—rather than those who simply possess the greatest memory for scripts.

Prioritizing the internal development of the man ensures that the "dog" (character) remains in control of the "tail" (ritual). When the performance becomes the primary metric of success, the fraternity risks becoming a theatre troupe rather than a school of character.
