Hear2Help In early 2017, we started the process and established Hear 2 help. Sometimes you have to step back to move forward.

Our recent announcement to wind down Hear 2 help is an example of that. We are excited and grateful to share with you that the Hear 2 help mission of providing financial assistance to local children who are Deaf/hard-of-hearing for hearing aids and assistive technology will continue thanks to Sertoma and their executive director Jason Camis. Sertoma is a national nonprofit based right here in Kans

as City, MO. They have been a service organization for over 100 years, with clubs and hearing health partners in 45 states and Canada/Mexico, supporting a hearing health mission and now they will also be continuing our mission serving children. Moving forward, Sertoma will be managing and facilitating all aspects of the Hear 2 help assistance program. We are thrilled that local families will continue to have a resource to assist in funding these cost-prohibitive devices! For more information please contact Brian Riegel, [email protected] and visit www.Sertoma.org. Lastly, we want to remind you that the Hear 2 help Scholarship that was established in 2023 will continue separately and be administered through the Great KC Community Foundation. Did you know captions in gaming do more than make games accessible? They can also help protect your hearing!

For deaf and hard-of-hearing gamers, real-time captions open the door to conversations, teamwork and camaraderie that happen during gameplay. But captions can also benefit hearing players by allowing them to turn down the volume while still following voice chats and important game cues.

Gaming can be one of those rare things where a parent and child actually connect on equal ground. But that bonding only works if both people can be part of the conversation. Hearing loss can make that moment impossible because one of them can’t hear the other.

A recent feature from the University of Miami highlights how cochlear implant success depends not only on surgery, but on the ongoing partnership between families, educators, and hearing health professionals.

Educational specialists like Alexandria “Alex” Mestres are helping bridge the gap between medical care and the classroom by supporting children with cochlear implants as they navigate listening, learning and communication in everyday school settings. From managing classroom noise to ensuring appropriate accommodations, this kind of hands-on collaboration makes a lasting difference in student outcomes.

An educational specialist at the Miller School is bridging clinical care and classroom support for children with cochlear implants.

Parents: a simple habit today can help protect your child’s hearing for years to come. 🎧💙

Experts recommend following the “60/60 Rule” when kids use headphones or earbuds by listening at no more than 60% volume for no longer than 60 minutes at a time. Prolonged exposure to loud sounds can cause permanent hearing damage, especially for young ears.

Many phones and devices now allow parents to set volume limits, making it easier to build safe listening habits early. Small changes now can make a big difference later.

Wearing headphones every day has a greater effect on your ears than you might think. But your devices likely have features to help.

The FDA has approved the first-ever gene therapy designed to treat a rare form of inherited deafness—offering new hope to children born without hearing. In early trials, many participants experienced significant improvements, with some even gaining near-normal hearing after treatment.

The US Food and Drug Administration on Thursday approved the first gene therapy for inherited hearing loss, a one-time treatment that proved to be life-changing for a small number of children in a clinical trial who were born without hearing.

Reading struggles aren’t always about decoding words on a page; sometimes, the challenge runs deeper than that.

University of Utah highlights the often-overlooked connection between Developmental Language Disorder (DLD) and reading comprehension. DLD is a neurodevelopmental condition that affects how children understand and use language, including vocabulary, grammar and the ability to connect ideas. While it affects about 1 in 10 children, it is still widely underdiagnosed and misunderstood.

Because reading comprehension depends not only on recognizing words but also on understanding language meaning, children with DLD may be able to read aloud fluently yet still struggle to grasp what they’ve read. This disconnect can often be mistaken for other learning or behavioral challenges, when in reality it stems from underlying language differences.

Some children can read words accurately without grasping their meaning, while others understand language well but struggle to read the words themselves. In both cases,...

We're inspired by this story out of South Africa, where some of our youngest learners in the most disadvantaged communities are receiving the hearing testing and treatment they need thanks to a team of dedicated audiologists.

Even mild hearing difficulties can affect a child's ability to follow instructions, develop literacy skills, and engage confidently in the classroom.
