Asylum Clinic KC

Asylum Clinic KC Asylum Clinic Kansas City is a nonprofit organization dedicated to offering pro-bono immigration legal services to the KC metro area.

Our Mission: To increase access to excellent, affordable legal representation for marginalized and underserved immigrants in the Kansas City area through direct representation, pro se assistance, and community partnerships. Our Vision: All immigrants in our community deserve access to legal representation to seek humanitarian relief, defend themselves against deportation, and reunify with family.

Three Pillars of Our Work:
1) direct legal services
2) systemic advocacy
3) community education and engagement

Founded in 2017, Asylum Clinic KC (“ACKC”) aims to provide as many free legal consultations as possible to immigrants in the Kansas City community, as well as pro bono representation as capacity permits to diminish the number of people navigating the complex immigration system unaided. The Asylum Clinic Kansas City collaborates with community organizations to ensure we are providing holistic and trauma-informed services to our clients. ACKC is currently funded principally by two grants that allow it to serve two distinct immigrant populations: the 750 Afghan evacuees who arrived to Western Missouri in Fall of 2021 and unaccompanied minors while detained or post release from the Office of Refugee Resettlement. ACKC is actively pursuing expansion opportunities including fellowship programs, grant funding, pro bono case placement with attorney mentorship, and additional community partnerships.

Exciting progress in Kansas City. Let's keep it going!

Welcoming means ensuring every newcomer and immigrant family in Kansas City has equal access to city services and a real voice in our community.

KANSAS CITY, WE DID IT!

Thank you to City Councilmember Wes Rogers for his support of this work and for sponsoring Ordinance No. 260506, the Welcoming KC Commission is now official!

We have established this new 12-member advisory body as our vehicle for long-term inclusion. Here is what it will do:
- Strengthen civic engagement and establish a framework for resident-led oversight of inclusive service delivery.
- Bring together district residents and community-based organizations to actively inform city policy.
- Be the primary resident-led body supporting our city’s continued work of Certified Welcoming Status.

Thank you to every advocate, partner and resident who spoke up and shared their story. We are building systems that last and a city where everyone belongs! Together!

Immigration courts have been scheduling what are being called “mega master” hearings — sometimes over 100 people in the same hearing slot at once. Many of those dates have been scheduled or moved up with little or no advance notice, and people who miss roll call are receiving deportation orders on the spot.

Missing a hearing — even by a few minutes, even if you never knew the date changed — can mean a deportation order that takes effect immediately and comes with a fine of $5,130 or more.

If you have a case in immigration court, or know someone who does, check your hearing date every day. You can do that using your A-number on the EOIR website or by calling 1-800-898-7180. If the date changed, contact your attorney right away.

We put together a full explainer, available in English & Spanish, on what these hearings are, what options exist if you’ve already received a removal order, and what to do next. https://nipnlg.org/work/resources/mega-master-hearings-fast-cases-and-bad-outcomes

As Executive Director of Asylum Clinic KC, Clare Murphy Shaw is on the front lines of a growing asylum crisis in Kansas City. KCUR highlights her work helping hundreds of clients each year and her advocacy for a system that is more proportional, accessible, and humane.

Judges in Kansas City Immigration Court hear asylum cases from across Missouri and Kansas. The high denial rates for asylum stem from judicial discretion and how hard it can be to prove persecution in one’s home country.

ACKC is devastated for our Afghan clients. They are US allies who were promised safety, security here in the U.S. and reunification with their families. We must honor our commitments and grant Afghan evacuees lawful status and resume visa processing.

The tragedy of child separation continues. Many people simply don't understand the reality that thousands of US Citizen children are being separated from their parents as a result of mass deportation and left to fend for themselves or left with caregivers. The trauma will leave a lasting impact on these kids.

About 36% of children whose parents were detained were younger than six, Brookings Institution study found

Can you imagine fleeing your home to protect your family, only to have to relive that trauma now?
Refugees who entered the United States legally under the Biden Administration are being re-vetted to maintain their legal refugee status and remain in the United States. This may include re-interviewing with federal officials. JVS is building a volunteer corps to support these individuals, and we need your help!
Can you spare a few hours? We need 50 to 75 volunteers to help refugees in Kansas City navigate a new federal requirement that puts their legal status at risk. One 90-minute training in May, then one or more 2.5-hour clinics in June. Sign up at the link in our bio or here:
