After facing a rare breast cancer diagnosis of fibromatosis-like metaplastic carcinoma, Juanita Gordon, BSHS, RRT-ACCS, found a meaningful way to bring comfort and hope to other women. The support she received from her NKC Health care team and other cancer survivors made a lasting impression, inspiring her to give back.

After surgery, Juanita experienced firsthand some of the challenges of recovery, including a difficult ride home with a seat belt crossing her surgical site and drains. She began creating survival bags for other breast cancer patients, filled with practical items like homemade seat belt pillows, mini fans and shower capes with drain holders to make recovery a little easier.

“I am now grateful to be the unknown survivor who gives back with understanding and compassion,” Juanita said. “I say a prayer over each one for strength, courage and healing.”

NKC Health and KC Shepherd's Center are partnering to continue providing Meals on Wheels to approximately 180 older adults throughout the Northland, ensuring uninterrupted access to hot, nutritious meals and meaningful connections. The partnership follows the announced closure of Northland Shepherd’s Center set for the end of October.

“Meals on Wheels is about more than providing a nutritious meal. It’s about helping our neighbors remain independent and connected to their community,” said Stephen Reintjes Sr., MD, president and CEO of NKC Health. “We are grateful for our longstanding partnership with Northland Shepherd’s Center and look forward to continuing this important work with KC Shepherd’s Center.”
