This evening we responded along with the Fairmont Hahntown Volunteer Fire Department for a lawn tractor on fire behind a residence. Attack 2 arrived and extinguished the fire. Engine 2 and Rescue 6 also assisted on scene.

This week started off with the annual Memorial Day Parade in Irwin. Prior to the parade a few of our members gathered at the cemetery with the family of John “Buck” Brighenti who passed away in the line of duty while serving our department in 1984. Saturday Rescue 2 attended the Scott C. Classic’s Tribute to Our Veteran’s Car Cruise along with a crew from the Fairmont Hahntown Volunteer Fire Department.

Unfortunately, there was a recent spike in the cost of some of the ingredients and we have to raise the price to $12 each in order to maintain a profit for the fundraiser. However, the subs are indeed delicious and an 18” sub for $12 is still a pretty good deal in our opinion 😁

Tuesday morning started our day with a 3 vehicle collision with rollover with reported injuries and entrapment. The Chief arrived as the call was being dispatched confirming no entrapment and all occupants out of the vehicles. Rescue 2 mitigated scene hazards while crews from Station 3 provided traffic control. Later that morning Engine 2 took in a fire alarm activation and cancelled en route. In the evening, Engine and Squad 2 responded into Arona for a house fire. Crews from the Engine and Squad assisted with fire suppression.

The opening line in the Strawpump Volunteer Fire Department’s mission statement is to provide protection of life, property, and the environment from the effects of fires, medical emergencies, and hazards. Today, after partnering with Sage's Army, Inc., we are further equipped to do so. All of our apparatus will now carry 2 doses of intranasal naloxone, a lifesaving medication that acts as a reversal agent in opioid overdoses. Additionally, we will also have the resources to connect individuals and their families with Sage’s Army for follow-up support. In emergency services our job is not to judge, it is to intervene.

This afternoon our crews conducted a fire drill in coordination with Independence Health at their Norwin facility. A smooth and coordinated evacuation of both patients and workers is critical for life safety during an emergency. Afterwards we proceeded to the Galaxy Building in the same complex and practiced soft entry techniques on commercial doors. Soft entry allows us to gain access utilizing specialized equipment through locked doors without causing damage.

UPDATE #2: This is now an active gas leak. The roadway remains closed while First Energy and Columbia gas make repairs. Expect this to extend well into the afternoon.

UPDATE: The incident eventually progressed to the pole burning through and live wires down. The roadway will remain closed for an unknown period of time while First Energy remains on scene.

Pennsylvania Avenue between Gregg Dr. and First St. is currently closed due to a telephone pole on fire.
