Kassunga Mission Initiative

Kassunga Mission Initiative KMI is an nonprofit organization devoted to creating brighter futures for the children in the rural village of Kassunga, Uganda!

Kassunga is a rural village in southern Uganda. The families in this village live in poverty, often going without basic necessities like clean water or a pair of shoes. Despite this, we discovered on a mission trip to Uganda that the people of Kassunga embrace life with positivity and hope for the future that is truly inspiring! Our goal at KMI is to help them break the cycle of poverty through ed

ucation. We are building a school called St. Theresa Learning Center where students can learn everything from reading and writing to trade skills like carpentry and hairdressing. The children will have brighter futures than their parents ever dreamed and the villagers who work to build the structure and furniture or teach in the school are earning income to provide for their families! We are even building a well that will give them access to drinkable water, something they currently have to walk for miles carrying heavy jugs to get! There is so much more work to be done to change the lives of these amazing people! These pictures show the difference you can make! Your prayers and support for our mission means so much more than we can describe, but for now we say “Thank you!” or as they say in Uganda… “Weebale nnyo!”

Earlier this month, about 100 St. Teresa Learning Centre alumni returned to their Alma Mater for an overnight reunion. There was a special evening roast, with a bonfire the evening everyone arrived. Attendees stayed in the dormitories which were vacant as currents students were home on break. The next morning included breakfast, Mass celebrated by Father John Kazibwe, a presentation by a motivational speaker, and a luncheon.

All the young people you see in this video are people whose lives YOU have directly impacted through your support of KMI as a volunteer, a donor, or simply through your prayers! How beautiful is the sound of their joyful gratitude for the blessings thy have received?

We would love to make this reunion an annual tradition for former STLC students to come together and celebrate their accomplishments at the school where it all began! To help us make that happen, visit https://kassungamission.org/about-us/ and click “Donate”.

It’s going to be a great weekend to enjoy a Richmond Flying Squirrels baseball game! And when you’re ready for some food and a nice cold drink, come see us at the concession stand on the upper deck, third base side. We’ll be there today, tomorrow, and Sunday!

Every purchase from our concession stand will bring us closer to realizing some exciting new projects we’ve been dreaming up for the village of Kassunga!

If you have ever participated in or sponsored our annual Wishing for Wells Golf Tournament, this is part of the amazing gift you have given to the people of Kassunga! These tanks collect gallons and gallons of water from the wells we have constructed in the village, storing that water so that it can be used at the school and shared with the community…even during the dry season.

At KMI, we believe that no human being should have to live without access to water that is clean and uncontaminated. Thank you for helping us give that to the people of Kassunga!

In the area of Uganda where the village of Kassunga and St. Teresa Learning Centre are located, the roads and earth are composed of a type of fine, powdery, red dirt which easily spreads everywhere…even covering buildings and trees at times!

Walkways made of stone, brick, or pavers (like these at St. Teresa Learning Centre) are not just pretty to look at…they cut down on that red dust being brought into the buildings as hundreds of feet belonging to students and staff members move around the campus each day. A cleaner school is a healthier environment for children to learn and grow!

While in Uganda, our 2025 mission team had the opportunity to celebrate the 63rd birthday of our dear friend, Bishop Serverus Jjumba of the Catholic Diocese of Masaka! They enjoyed food, beverages, cake, and good times with the Bishop’s friends and family!

Bishop Jjumba has been one of KMI’s biggest supporters and he and the diocese have have facilitated collaborations between team members in Uganda and the USA. But some might say his warm smile and jovial spirit are what we love most about him!

Although the KMI 2025 mission trip has ended, we will continue to share beautiful moments from the trip here for you…like this scene from Fr. Bonyventure’s ordination celebration! The whole community joins in these sorts of celebrations in Uganda, and many people bring gifts to congratulate the new priest and help him begin his ministry. In turn, they often receive blessings from the new priest! It is a lively and joyous celebration filled with music, food, and (as you can see here) the biggest smiles!
