KMI is an nonprofit organization devoted to creating brighter futures for the children in the rural village of Kassunga, Uganda!

Kassunga is a rural village in southern Uganda. The families in this village live in poverty, often going without basic necessities like clean water or a pair of shoes. Despite this, we discovered on a mission trip to Uganda that the people of Kassunga embrace life with positivity and hope for the future that is truly inspiring! Our goal at KMI is to help them break the cycle of poverty through education. We are building a school called St. Theresa Learning Center where students can learn everything from reading and writing to trade skills like carpentry and hairdressing. The children will have brighter futures than their parents ever dreamed and the villagers who work to build the structure and furniture or teach in the school are earning income to provide for their families! We are even building a well that will give them access to drinkable water, something they currently have to walk for miles carrying heavy jugs to get! There is so much more work to be done to change the lives of these amazing people! These pictures show the difference you can make! Your prayers and support for our mission means so much more than we can describe, but for now we say “Thank you!” or as they say in Uganda… “Weebale nnyo!”

Yesterday was World Teacher Day, so please help us thank the many dedicated teachers who help students at St. Teresa Learning Centre learn and achieve success! We are so grateful for all that you do for our students, for your hard work and sacrifices day after day. And when our team from the USA comes to visit, your warm welcome, smiles and laughter make our time at the school so special!

Father John also recently spent quality time with our students at the Convent School, St. Aloysius Bwanda! With tears of joy in their eye, they too send you their warmest greetings! With your support, these young women are pursuing secondary education and following their dreams!

During a trip to Uganda last month, Fr. John visited the seminarians at Bukalasa Junior Seminary, his Alma mater! This new generation of students are continuing an educational journey that, in some cases, began at St. Teresa Learning Centre thanks to supporters of our Tuition Assistance Program. They send you very warm greetings!

Today is UNESCO International Literacy Day, a day to recognize the rights of every person to learn how to read and write. Since the inception of KMI, we have been striving to make education affordable and accessible to children in Uganda so that they can be empowered through literacy! This can include distributing books and writing instruments to students like these, who are furthering their education at secondary school.

Ten years ago, these children welcomed American visitors to their village in Uganda! After that trip, lasting friendships were born and Kassunga Mission Initiative, a ministry group which evolved into a nonprofit organization, was born!

A special Mass was celebrated at St. Teresa Learning Centre on Fun day, Friday, August 7th. The Celebrant was Fr. Isaac, who had been ordained as a priest just days earlier l, and has served as a translator us when American mission teams visit the school. Several children at the school received First Holy Communion that day! What a joyful celebration!

Did you know that your support of KMI helps fund a medical clinic at the school? In addition to the ongoing care of the school nurse, this annual clinic brings many skilled medical officers to the village of Kassunga to examine and treat students for a variety of ailments, including malaria. Whether students are living in the campus dormitory, or at home with their families, they leave the clinic with medications and hygiene products they might otherwise not have access to. Wellness is so important!

Looks like St. Teresa Learning Centre students had a blast at Fun Day, an annual end-of-term celebration! They’ve worked hard and earned this opportunity to relax and have fun before another school term begins!

Ten years ago, in July 2016, a group of travelers from the USA embarked on a journey to Uganda. They explored different parts of the country (both urban and rural), crosses the Equator, saw the Nile River and Lake Victoria, and even went on a safari!

But the most precious memory of that trip was visiting the village of Kassunga. Meeting the sweet children and enthusiastic parent and teachers. Seeing the 2 room school building where they worked and studied and dreamed big dreams!

The travelers began to dream big dreams of their own. Dreams of building up that school, supporting this amazing community, and giving the children the best possible future! And soon after…Kassunga Mission Initiative was born! It has been an INCREDIBLE 10 years, and we look forward to many more!

We look fondly at the past where it all began, and dream of what we can achieve in the future as we work hand-in-hand!

Earlier this month, about 100 St. Teresa Learning Centre alumni returned to their Alma Mater for an overnight reunion. There was a special evening roast, with a bonfire the evening everyone arrived. Attendees stayed in the dormitories which were vacant as currents students were home on break. The next morning included breakfast, Mass celebrated by Father John Kazibwe, a presentation by a motivational speaker, and a luncheon.

All the young people you see in this video are people whose lives YOU have directly impacted through your support of KMI as a volunteer, a donor, or simply through your prayers! How beautiful is the sound of their joyful gratitude for the blessings thy have received?
