Atlantic White Shark Conservancy

Atlantic White Shark Conservancy Cape Cod based 501(c)(3) registered nonprofit committed to raising public awareness of white sharks. North Atlantic.

The Conservancy supports scientific research, improves public safety, and educates the community, to inspire conservation of Atlantic white sharks. Welcome to the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy page! We are a nonprofit organization based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts, established in 2012 to support white shark research, education, and conservation.

2009 marked the first time great white

sharks were successfully tagged in the U.S. Tags have been deployed each summer off the coast of Cape Cod to monitor local and large scale movements of great whites. By tracking local movements, scientists can work with local officials to help keep the public safe and by monitoring large scale movements, we can learn more about shark behavior once they leave the Cape. Public education on great white sharks will bring a greater awareness and appreciation for this vulnerable apex predator. By supporting research and education, the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is taking steps to ensure the future of this magnificent species. Atlantic White Shark Conservancy is a nonprofit,tax-exempt charitable organization under Section 501(c)3) of the Internal Revenue Code.

Happy White Shark Wednesday! Have you checked out our app, Sharktivity, lately? White Shark “Freeman” recently pinged in just off Tom’s River, NJ and white shark “AFTCO” pinged in off of Hatteras, NC. Both of these individuals were tagged off Hilton Head, SC this past winter by AWSC’s Senior Scientist, Dr. Megan Winton, with the help of Outcast Sport Fishing .

These pings are from SPOT tags, that are attached to the tip of the shark's dorsal fin. Whenever the tag breaks the surface of the water it transmits a series of signals to overhead satellites that allow for near-real time tracking. Shark scientists use these tags to study shark movements and to complement the data collected by other types of tags.

Every wave, every tide, every sunset over the Atlantic reminds us how connected we all are to the ocean. At the Atlantic White Shark Conservancy, World Environment Day is a reminder that protecting white sharks means protecting an entire ecosystem. Together, through research, education, and conservation, we can help ensure these waters remain wild and thriving for generations to come.

Happy White Shark Wednesday from "Quasimodo"! This 8ft male white shark was identified by video footage in 2018. This particular shark has an abnormal back but we have seen him multiple times while out on the water. In 2021, we also observed an injury to right pelvic region. When seen again in 2023, the injury was healed.
