This weekend was a whirlwind and I am grateful to have been able to serve my community in a different capacity. I do want to say something regarding the runoff election tomorrow and the upcoming municipal elections in November. There are candidates that are running for these offices that are known within their communities. Having run for office previously and having been adjacent to people who have run for office I can say that it is not for the weak. Being in the public spotlight constantly, talking to people who may not be as polite as you might be and the overall mental drain that campaigns can put on you is overwhelming.
I want people to understand that politics is life and despite how we may feel life is political. But, we must also not lose our humanity, empathy and compassion during these times. I’m not going to say who anyone should vote for, not because I don’t want to but because I want people to actually make that decision for themselves. I constantly put out content regarding the issues that I feel folks should be paying attention to and encourage folks to remember who actually addresses those issues come election time. The bitter pill to swallow is that our current political system is a result of our actions or inaction. The special election for SC Senate District 42 has almost 60,000 eligible voters and in the first election a few weeks ago only about 3900 people turned out to vote.
In the upcoming municipal elections coming up this November there are 100,000+ people in the cities of Charleston and North Charleston and historically the turnout has barely been higher than 20 percent in the last few elections.
So, as people begin their day/week please check www.scvotes.gov to see if you have to vote tomorrow and to see who is on the ballot in your district in November. In the age of information it is important to be informed about your local elections.
There are many issues that are impacting the black community and other marginalized communities. Having representation that is willing to work to address these issues is critical.
Have a great day.
