Today was court day. Each of these gentlemen pleaded no contest and were each fined $465.

The maximum fine for this is $1092. The Judge gave no explanation as to why the fine was less than half of what he had the power to levy.

I also learned today that the City of North Charleston ordinance doesn't differentiate between littering and dumping. The violation is treated exactly the same.

The City of North Charleston also has no Community Service Program for offenders.

If North Charleston is serious about correcting this issue, they will revisit the ordinance to more closely match that of the State and also ask some serious questions about why the Judges sentence so lightly in these cases.
