📢 We just announced this year's litter enforcement grant recipients: eight agencies across seven counties, sharing $31,881 to crack down on illegal dumping and littering.

In 2023, PalmettoPride took part in a multistate study on litter enforcement. The finding? Steeper penalties don't move the needle. They can even backfire, making officers more hesitant to write tickets in the first place. What actually changes behavior is the certainty of getting caught.

That's why this grant funds tools that increase enforcement, not just fines — like new dumpsite surveillance equipment for Anderson County and trail cameras that have already helped Chester County identify offenders.

Last year, our enforcement partners collected $86,308 in fines from littering, dumping, and unsecured-load violations statewide. But equipment and outreach only go so far. At the end of the day, we need officers writing tickets.

This year's grantees include: Allendale County Sheriff’s Office, Anderson County Environmental & Code Enforcement, Bamberg County Code Enforcement, Chester County, South Carolina, Dorchester County Government Solid Waste/Public Works, County of Lexington Solid Waste Management, Pelion Police Department, and Town of Ware Shoals.

1. Why don't we clean it? It's a private multi-million dollar corporation. We clean many other places in the city. Daily.

2. That looks like railroad property.
I don't think the conductor threw all that out. If you are proud of your business you should pick up your parking lot and be aware of the appearance. Most of this could be reached by grabbers from the parking lot. The rest of it is right in front of the business.
