This week marks signing of The Americans with Disabilities Act of 1990 (ADA), a civil rights law that prohibits discrimination based on disability. It affords similar protections against discrimination to Americans with disabilities as the Civil Rights Act of 1964, which made discrimination based on race, religion, s*x, national origin, and other characteristics illegal, and later s*xual orientation and gender identity. In addition, unlike the Civil Rights Act, the ADA also requires covered employers to provide reasonable accommodations to employees with disabilities, and imposes accessibility requirements on public accommodations.

🏑 Building a More Inclusive Charleston Starts with Housing for All

Everyone deserves a place to live, belong, and thrive.

SOS Care is proud to support the vision of a Neuro-Inclusive Housing Frameworkβ€”a community-centered approach that creates housing opportunities where neurodiverse individuals and people of all abilities can live with dignity, independence, and connection.

Neuro-inclusive communities are designed to foster:
βœ… Diverse and affirming housing options
βœ… Community connection and belonging
βœ… Supportive services and resources
βœ… Sensory-friendly and accessible design
βœ… Choice, equity, and dignity

As we work toward making this vision a reality, SOS Care is actively seeking land, development partnerships, and affordable housing opportunities located near public transportation and bus routes throughout the Tri-County area (Berkeley, Charleston, and Dorchester Counties).

If you know of available property, development opportunities, or affordable housing resources that could support inclusive housing initiatives, we would love to hear from you.

Together, we can build communities where everyone feels at home. πŸ’™

Spanish footballer Marc Cucurella recently shared something that resonates with so many autism families:

"Nobody teaches you how to be a parent... You have to learn to understand him."

For many parents of children with autism, the journey is one of learning, growing, and discovering new ways to communicate, connect, and celebrate every milestone along the way.

At SOS Care, we're honored to walk alongside families by providing programs, resources, and a community where individuals with Autism and Intellectual Disabilities can thrive.

Because understanding changes lives. πŸ’™
